A week of radical love | Una semana de amor radical

Over the past few days, we have had the immense pleasure of welcoming back good friends, the leaders and crew from Amo Mi Ciudad (I love my city), a group of incredibly generous and talented volunteers from a local church, Más Vida. We are so thankful for the time they shared with us and how they shared the message of “you are so valuable” to the individuals in our communities.

Durante los últimos días, hemos tenido el inmenso placer de darles la bienvenida a buenos amigos, los líderes y el equipo de Amo Mi Ciudad, un grupo de voluntarios increíblemente generosos y talentosos de una iglesia local, Más Vida. Estamos muy agradecidos por el tiempo que compartieron con nosotros y por cómo compartieron el mensaje “eres tan valioso” a las personas de nuestras comunidades.

The volunteers visited our partner schools, helping prepare and serve the meals as well as leading activities with the students. At the kinder, the students got to see, hear, even touch a guitar and learn about how it makes music. Then, of course it was time to sing! We can neither confirm nor deny that some praise broke out!

Los voluntarios visitaron nuestras escuelas aliadas, ayudaron a preparar y servir las comidas y dirigieron actividades con los estudiantes. En el kínder, los estudiantes pudieron ver, oír e incluso tocar una guitarra y aprender cómo se hace música. Entonces, ¡por supuesto que llegó el momento de cantar! ¡No podemos ni confirmar ni negar que si hubo un poco de alabanza!

The worship continued in the streets, people gathered to listen, to be prayed for and to simply soak in the truths of love and forgiveness being sung over them. Everyone walking down the streets at that time stopped. They were captivated.

El culto continuó en las calles, la gente se reunió para escuchar, orar por ellos y simplemente sumergirse en las verdades de amor y perdón que se cantaban sobre ellos. Todos los que caminaban por las calles en ese momento se detuvieron. Quedaron cautivados.

There was non-stop jump-roping and giggles, hundreds of sandwiches being passed out and entire families eager to listen and learn more about God. Each day was filled with activities, hundreds of conversations and hugs but the best was yet to come. On Friday, the women in our communities were invited to Casa MARKED for a special event, just for them.

Hubo saltos a la cuerda y risas sin parar, se repartieron cientos de sándwiches y familias enteras ansiosas por escuchar y aprender más acerca de Dios. Cada día estuvo lleno de actividades, cientos de conversaciones y abrazos pero lo mejor estaba por llegar. El viernes, las mujeres de nuestras comunidades fueron invitadas a Casa MARKED para un evento especial, solo para ellas.

The team of volunteers from both Más Vida and dear friends from another church community, Bread of Life Guadalajara, pampered the women with free hair cuts and styling. Then, they were invited to stay for a special message and time of worship. It was a time designed just for them, to remind them how loved they are, how valued they are and how beautiful they are on the inside and outside.

El equipo de voluntarios de Más Vida y queridos amigos de otra comunidad de la iglesia, Bread of Life (El pan de vida) Guadalajara, consintieron a las mujeres con cortes de cabello y peinados gratuitos. Luego, fueron invitados a quedarse para escuchar un mensaje especial y un tener un tiempo de adoración. Fue un momento diseñado sólo para ellos, para recordarles lo amados que son, lo valorados que son y lo hermosos que son por dentro y por fuera.

We are so thankful for these volunteers, for the love and truth they brought to our communities and the time we could share together. There are no words to sufficiently describe how the past few days impacted the lives of so many individuals in our communities.

Estamos muy agradecidos por estos voluntarios, por el amor y la verdad que trajeron a nuestras comunidades y el tiempo que pudimos compartir juntos. No hay palabras para describir suficientemente cómo los últimos días impactaron las vidas de tantas personas en nuestras comunidades.

Thank you to each and every person that is a part of MARKED, that has joined the movement to break cycles of poverty and empower lives. Sometimes, it happens little by little and other times, like this week, we see radical shifts. Either way, time is not our concern. It´s about heart changes, and we are seeing more and more happen!

Gracias a todas y cada una de las personas que forman parte de MARKED, que se han unido al movimiento para romper ciclos de pobreza y empoderar vidas. A veces sucede poco a poco y otras veces, como esta semana, vemos cambios radicales. De todas maneras, el tiempo no es nuestra preocupación. Se trata de cambios en el corazón, ¡y vemos que suceden cada vez más!

A neighbor saved | Un vecino salvado

Just down the street from Casa MARKED is the family home of one of our staff members. There, live her parents, siblings and their children. While many of the kids often come to Casa MARKED and participate in our programs, the adults are often not as available to come by due to work. 

A unos pasos de Casa MARKED está la casa de la familia de uno de los miembros de nuestro personal. Allí viven sus padres, hermanos y los hijos. Muchos de los niños suelen venir a Casa MARKED y participar en nuestros programas, pero los adultos muchas veces no están disponibles para venir debido al trabajo.

So, it is truly remarkable to us how MARKED, our culture and beliefs had reached even the father. About a month ago, we received news that the father had fallen ill. Despite the efforts made to manage the sickness, an infection had spread across his body and he was in very serious condition. 

Así que nos sorprende como MARKED, nuestra cultura y creencias habían llegado hasta al padre. Hace aproximadamente un mes recibimos la noticia de que el padre había enfermado. A pesar de los esfuerzos realizados para controlar la enfermedad, una infección se había extendido por su cuerpo y él se encontraba en un estado muy grave.

As the family waited for transportation to the hospital to arrive, we were invited to pray for the father. It was in that intimate moment that he decided to give his life to the Lord. A time of genuine  worry and concern about his health quickly shifted to a joyful time, gratefully celebrating his decision. 

Mientras la familia esperaba que llegara el transporte al hospital, fuimos invitados a pasar y orar por el padre. Fue en ese momento íntimo que él decidió entregar su vida al Señor. Un momento de angustia y preocupación por su salud rápidamente se convirtió en un momento de alegría, celebrando con gratitud su decisión.

Just this week, we were able to chat with him a bit more. After multiple appointments and treatments, he is back on his feet, fully healed and has returned to work already! 

Esta misma semana pudimos conversar un poco más con él y después de múltiples citas y tratamientos, ¡está de nuevo en pie, completamente curado y ya ha regresado a trabajar!

We are filled with such joy knowing another soul has been won over, and also, how this salvation has positively impacted the whole family. Hearts have been softened, forgiveness granted, and relationships restored in this family thanks to this father’s bold decision. It is a new beginning for them! 

Nos llena de alegría saber que otra alma ha sido ganada y también cómo esta salvación ha impactado positivamente a toda la familia. Los corazones duros se han suavizado, se ha concedido el perdón y se han restablecido las relaciones en esta familia gracias a la decisión de este padre. ¡Es un nuevo comienzo para ellos!

How exciting it is for us to be reminded that members in our communities that do not or cannot come through our doors, are also being reached! Our neighbors are watching, seeing and hearing what MARKED is doing and how our culture is different from the one outside, and they want in.

¡Qué emocionante es para nosotros recordar que los miembros de nuestras comunidades que no entran o no pueden cruzar nuestras puertas también están siendo alcanzados! Nuestros vecinos están observando, viendo y escuchando lo que MARKED está haciendo y cómo nuestra cultura es diferente a la de afuera, y quieren ser parte.

A generation transformed | Una generación transformada

Whenever we see the now-adults who were just children when MARKED began working in these areas, it reminds us of the incredible transformation we have seen across the villages where we serve.

Cada vez que vemos a los ahora adultos que eran solo niños cuando MARKED comenzó a trabajar en estas áreas, nos recuerda la increíble transformación que hemos visto en las aldeas donde servimos.

 If you have been with us since the beginning, you may remember that there were no paved roads to connect the main highway to the villages we serve. Thankfully, now we have a narrow but very much accessible road all the way down the mountain to the banks of the lake where the communities are.

Si has estado con nosotros desde el principio, quizás recuerdas que no había caminos pavimentados para conectar la carretera principal con los pueblos a los que servimos. Afortunadamente, ahora tenemos una calle pavimentada que baja de la montaña hasta las orillas del lago donde están las comunidades.

When we began visiting these areas and building relationships with the families here, the majority of people were unclothed too. It is incredible to see transformations like these take place over time. After over a decade of MARKED partnering with local organizations, children's homes, schools, and churches, we have been able to see significant changes take place.

Cuando comenzamos a visitar estas áreas y a establecer relaciones con las familias aquí, la mayoría de las personas también estaban desnudas. Es increíble ver transformaciones como éstas a lo largo del tiempo. Después de más de una década de asociación de MARKED con organizaciones locales, casahogares, escuelas e iglesias, hemos podido ver que se han producido cambios significativos.

 Now, we are seeing how the first generation of children we served living differently than the generation prior. The little boys and girls who grew up in the midst of crime, violence, drugs, abuse and other negative cycles found refuge and support in MARKED. Through our programs, they learned to stand up, to say “no” to the negative cycles. Now, they are saying “yes” to creating new, healthy cycles in place of those old, broken ones. They are working hard to raise their children so that together as a family, they can experience life to the fullest.

Ahora, estamos viendo cómo la primera generación de niños a la que servimos vive de manera diferente a la generación anterior. Los niños y niñas que crecieron en medio del crimen, la violencia, las drogas, el abuso y otros ciclos negativos encontraron refugio y apoyo en MARKED. A través de nuestros programas, aprendieron a levantarse, a decir “no” a los ciclos negativos. Ahora dicen “sí” a la creación de ciclos nuevos y saludables en lugar de los viejos y rotos. Están trabajando duro para criar a sus hijos para que juntos, como familia, puedan experimentar la vida al máximo.

In the areas we serve, the education scene has drastically changed too. For the 2022-2023 school year, the local public school district was overwhelmed by the amount of new enrollees for preschool which led to us sharing our space and as you probably know, opening a school at our community center! In our partner schools in La Peña and Chalpicote, there was a record high in enrollment too. Attendance is also currently at the highest point it has ever been. Our numbers from the schools we work with and in conversations with other local schools where many children from our daily programs attend class, show more children are starting school and also finishing elementary school, with more continuing on to middle school as well. 

En las áreas donde servimos, el panorama educativo también ha cambiado drásticamente. Para el año escolar 2022-2023, el distrito escolar público local se vio abrumado por la cantidad de nuevos inscritos en preescolar, lo que nos llevó a compartir nuestro espacio y, como probablemente ya sabías, ¡abrir una escuela en nuestro centro comunitario! En nuestras escuelas aliadas en La Peña y Chalpicote también se registró un récord de matrícula. La asistencia también se encuentra actualmente en el punto más alto que jamás haya existido. Nuestros números de las escuelas con las que trabajamos y en conversaciones con otras escuelas locales donde muchos niños de nuestros programas diarios asisten a clase, muestran que más niños están comenzando la escuela y también terminando la escuela primaria, y muchos más continúan también en la escuela secundaria.

From being small, quiet fishing villages isolated from much of the outside world, are now growing towns with a changing trajectory. New statistics are in the making and new records are being reached. One generation has already been transformed and others are already being positively affected too!

Thank you for being a part of this movement. Thank you for positively impacting lives. Thank you for helping the communities along Lake Chapala and beyond live better, and more fully than anyone ever imagined.

De ser pequeñas y tranquilas comunidades de pescadores aisladas de gran parte del mundo exterior, ahora son pueblos en crecimiento con una trayectoria cambiada. Se están elaborando nuevas estadísticas y se están alcanzando nuevos récords. Una generación ya ha sido transformada y otras ya están siendo impactadas positivemente también.

Gracias por ser parte de este movimiento. Gracias por impactar vidas positivamente. Gracias por ayudar a las comunidades a lo largo del lago Chapala y más allá a vivir mejor y más plenamente de lo que culaquier hubiera imaginado.

The influence of one | La influencia de uno

This past week, we celebrated the retirement of the director of our partner school in La Peña, Sofia. We attended her retirement party along with her family members and friends who have had the pleasure of knowing and working alongside her. Though we did not know her before she arrived to work at La Peña, she has worked a total of 28 years in public schools and we can only imagine the number of lives which she has positively impacted through her leadership in the various schools and communities where she has worked.

This got us thinking about just how much influence one person can have.

La semana pasada celebramos la jubilación del director de nuestra escuela asociada en La Peña, Sofía. Asistimos a su fiesta de jubilación junto a sus familiares y amigos que han tenido el placer de conocerla y trabajar junto a ella. Aunque no la conocíamos antes de que llegara a trabajar a La Peña, ha trabajado un total de 28 años en escuelas públicas y solo podemos imaginar la cantidad de vidas que ha impactado positivamente a través de su liderazgo en las diversas escuelas y comunidades donde ella ha trabajado.

Esto nos hizo pensar en cuánta influencia puede tener una persona.

The work pictured above is by a Mexican artist, Jorge Méndez Blake, done in 2007. In interviews, he shared that with this wall, he wanted to communicate that seemingly small ideas or decisions could have a monumental effect, despite how little they may appear.

El trabajo que se muestra arriba es del artista mexicano, Jorge Méndez Blake, realizado en 2007. En entrevistas, compartió que con este muro quería comunicar que ideas o decisiones aparentemente pequeñas podrían tener un efecto monumental, a pesar de lo pequeñas que puedan parecer. .

This visual shows us how significant of an impact can result from just one action, or in our case, perhaps one person. In our communities, corruption and negative cycles of poverty like addiction and abuse run far and deep but just like this little book making a dent in the wall, we have seen individuals in our communities start to disrupt the negative cycles and patterns around them. 

Esta imagen nos muestra cuán significativo puede ser el impacto que puede resultar de una sola acción, o en nuestro caso, tal vez de una persona. En nuestras comunidades, la corrupción y los ciclos negativos de pobreza, como la adicción y el abuso, son muy profundos, pero al igual que este pequeño libro que hace mella en la pared, hemos visto a personas en nuestras comunidades comenzar a alterar los ciclos y patrones negativos que los rodean.

After nearly 12 years of working in the communities along the shores of Lake Chapala, we are already seeing individuals say no to crime, no to drugs, and yes to family. The moms pictured above come to Casa MARKED each day to be with their children, nieces and nephews in a safe place.

Después de casi 12 años de trabajo en las comunidades a lo largo de las orillas del lago de Chapala, ya estamos viendo a personas decir no al crimen, no a las drogas y sí a la familia. Las mamás que aparecen en la foto de arriba vienen a Casa MARKED todos los días para estar con sus hijos, sobrinas y sobrinos en un lugar seguro.

With the influence of Sofia and other leaders in the community, we have seen more families say yes to education too. The children who we met years ago, are now the young adults and new parents in the areas we serve. They are enrolling their children in school and they have hope for the future. 

Con la influencia de Sofía y otros líderes de la comunidad, hemos visto a más familias decir sí a la educación también. Los niños que conocimos hace años ahora son adultos jóvenes y nuevos padres en las áreas a las que servimos. Están inscribiendo a sus hijos en la escuela y tienen esperanzas para el futuro.

That is why we take time to build relationships with individuals, we personalize our approach in the different schools and neighborhoods we serve. We never know who might be the next individual empowered, the next metaphorical book under a wall of marginalization, injustice, and hopelessness that weakens over time, becoming more unsteady with each generation. In due time, the “wall”; the corruption, and the negative cycles holding these communities, will come crashing down.

Es por eso que nos tomamos el tiempo para construir relaciones con las personas y personalizamos nuestro enfoque en las diferentes escuelas y vecindarios a los que servimos. Nunca sabemos quién podría ser el próximo individuo empoderado, el próximo libro metafórico bajo un muro de marginación, injusticia y desesperanza que se debilita con el tiempo y se vuelve más inestable con cada generación. A su debido tiempo, el “muro”; la corrupción y los ciclos negativos que mantienen a estas comunidades se derrumbarán.

Another interesting aspect of this piece of art is that the book under the bricks was written by an author who passed away well before the artwork was assembled, as if to say, we may never know the impact we have on others. We probably will not ever know how many lives were positively affected by our actions .

Otro aspecto interesante de esta obra de arte es que el libro bajo los ladrillos fue escrito por un autor que falleció mucho antes de que se ensamblara la obra de arte, como si dijera que es posible que nunca sepamos el impacto que tenemos en los demás. Probablemente nunca sabremos cuántas vidas se vieron afectadas positivamente por nuestras acciones.

We can only imagine. Each conversation, each invitation to an event, each class taught, each meal served, each hi-five, each hug, each prayer, each game played.. We will never know what it will inspire. The best part is, it isn´t just MARKED staff that is working to bring lasting change in our communities. MARKED is a movement of individuals including, staff, directors, teachers, neighbors, government workers, and you!

This is our legacy.

Sólo podemos imaginarlo. Cada conversación, cada invitación a un evento, cada clase impartida, cada comida servida, cada choque de manos, cada abrazo, cada oración, cada juego jugado... Nunca sabremos qué inspirará. La mejor parte es que no es sólo el personal de MARKED el que está trabajando para lograr un cambio duradero en nuestras comunidades. MARKED es un movimiento de individuos que incluye personal, directores, maestros, vecinos, trabajadores gubernamentales y tu.

Este es nuestro legado.

“What does MARKED do?”

is a question we often get asked, and rightfully so! The programs we run, the institutions we support, and how we serve our communities changes from season to season. Our mission has remained the same but how it looks in different villages, with different families and different circumstances is of course not the same either. This is because we do not believe there is a one-size-fits-all solution for the members in the communities we serve so we must come to the table with open minds and listening ears.

“¿Qué hace MARKED?”

Es una pregunta que nos hacen a menudo, ¡y con razón! Los programas que ejecutamos, las instituciones que apoyamos y la forma en que servimos a nuestras comunidades cambian de una temporada a otra. Nuestra misión sigue siendo la misma, pero cómo se ve en diferentes pueblos, con diferentes familias y diferentes circunstancias, por supuesto, tampoco es la misma. Esto se debe a que no creemos que exista una solución única para los miembros de las comunidades a las que servimos, por lo que debemos sentarnos a la mesa con la mente abierta y oídos atentos.

Currently we run our community center, MARKED kindergarten, local school partnerships, and sports programs on a daily basis. We also have weekly educational classes like the Mommy & Me group, after-school tutoring sessions and also, a reading and writing club to help children who have never attended school or do not currently have the ability to, sometimes due to work, lack of parental support, or experience learning difficulties.

Actualmente administramos nuestro centro comunitario, el preescolar MARKED, alianzas con escuelas locales y programas deportivos a diario. También contamos con clases educativas semanales como el grupo de educación inicial, sesiones de tutorías extraescolares y también, un club de lectoescritura para ayudar a niños que nunca han asistido a la escuela o que actualmente no tienen la capacidad de hacerlo, en ocasiones por motivos de trabajo, falta de apoyo de sus padres o experimentar dificultades de aprendizaje.

As mentioned before, our approach to starting new projects is always to first identify the need and from there, it is to help our communities to dream, to think of the hopes and desires they have to together, solidify those goals to begin working towards them. In conversations with some of our teen boys who play on the soccer team, we realized they did not know how to read or write. This is why we began to evaluate the need for a space to help children learn to be literate. After exploring the idea, gaging interest, and hearing of additional cases of children unable to read, we decided to open a class. 

Como se mencionó anteriormente, nuestro enfoque para iniciar nuevos proyectos es siempre identificar primero la necesidad y, a partir de ahí, ayudar a nuestras comunidades a soñar, a pensar en las esperanzas y deseos que tienen para juntos, solidificar esas metas para comenzar a trabajar hacia ellas. . En conversaciones con algunos de nuestros adolescentes que juegan en el equipo de fútbol, ​​nos dimos cuenta de que no sabían leer ni escribir. Of course, we shared the news with the soccer boys, as the idea began from conversations with them. Our community center director sat down with them to share the news of the class and to personally invite them to attend. Initially, the boys looked confused. It was as if they did not know how to react. They got nervous and seemed overwhelmed by the idea of attending the class.
Por supuesto, compartimos la noticia con los chicos del fútbol, ​​ya que la idea surgió de conversaciones con ellos. At that moment, the director asked them, “You all have friends, right?” then, “Would you consider me a friend?” to which they quickly answered yes, smiling. So he continued to explain that a good friend cares for the well-being and also the growth of his or her friends. He shared with them that he, the director, wants to see them continue to grow and succeed not just as athletes in soccer practices and games but also in every other area of their lives. Learning to read and write has become a vital skill for daily life, he shared. So, together, sitting in the classroom chatting, the three boys and the director made a deal.

En ese momento, el director les preguntó: “Todos ustedes tienen amigos, ¿verdad?”. luego: “¿Me considerarías un amigo?” a lo que rápidamente respondieron que sí, sonriendo. Por eso continuó explicando que un buen amigo se preocupa por el bienestar y también por el crecimiento de sus amigos. The director ensured he would continue coaching and bringing in our special Coach Luis for soccer training as well as working to find games and tournaments across the area for the team to continue playing and getting opportunities to improve. All the boys have to do is show up for soccer, and also for the weekly reading and writing class so that together, we can continue to grow.

El director se aseguró de continuar entrenando y trayendo a nuestro entrenador especial Luis para el entrenamiento de fútbol, ​​además de trabajar para encontrar juegos y torneos en toda el área para que el equipo continúe jugando y obteniendo oportunidades para mejorar. The four shook on it and now, a month later, we can testify to the growth we have seen. Those boys, along with the rest of the team and the other children attending the reading and writing class unsurely placed their trust in us but now, exude new-found confidence. We have seen them scoring goals, learning letters, sounding out syllables, encouraging one another and enjoying not just results but valuing the process too.

Los cuatro cerraron la conversación con un apretón de la mano y ahora, un mes después, podemos dar testimonio del crecimiento que hemos visto. Esos niños, junto con el resto del equipo y los demás niños que asistían a la clase de lectura y escritura, sin duda depositaron su confianza en nosotros, pero ahora exudan una confianza recién adquirida. Los hemos visto marcar goles, aprender letras, pronunciar sílabas, animarse unos a otros y disfrutar no sólo de los resultados sino también valorando el proceso.

Many times it seems little stories like this do a better job of explaining what we do and how we do it than a program description ever could. We are in no rush. We do not arrive with goals or a pre-made plan. We show up, we listen, and we come alongside.

Muchas veces parece que pequeñas historias como ésta explican mejor lo que hacemos y cómo lo hacemos que la descripción de un programa. No tenemos prisa. No llegamos con metas ni con un plan preestablecido. Nos presentamos, escuchamos y nos acompañamos.

Over the past week, across the country, Mexicans were busy organizing parties in town squares and events in schools to commemorate September 16th, 1810 when the country's fight for independence began. There were fireworks, tamales, churros, and mariachi music in abundance! It is a special time of year that reminds us of Mexico´s long journey to independence from Spain and also, how far Mexico has grown and advanced since then.

Durante la semana pasada, en todo el país, los mexicanos estuvieron ocupados organizando fiestas en plazas y eventos en escuelas para conmemorar el 16 de septiembre de 1810, cuando comenzó la lucha del país por la independencia. ¡Hubo fuegos artificiales, tamales, churros y música de mariachi en abundancia! Es una época especial del año que nos recuerda la larga jornada de México hacia la independencia de España y también lo mucho que México ha crecido y avanzado desde entonces.

September brings stories of overcoming challenges and coming out victorious. It is a month that for so many, signifies celebration and hope. Those two words seem to summarize our September thus far as well. The first few days of September ushered us into both a new school year and a new fall sports season. This month we have also opened a school, begun two more weekly educational programs for children in our area and too, reinstated our partnership at two local schools where we have been invited in to give daily meals, come alongside staff and parents with ongoing training and support sessions.

Septiembre trae historias de superación de desafíos y salidas victoriosas. Es un mes que para muchos significa celebración y esperanza. Esas dos palabras también parecen resumir nuestro mes de septiembre hasta el momento. Los primeros días de septiembre nos dieron paso a un nuevo año escolar y a una nueva temporada deportiva de otoño. Este mes también abrimos una escuela, comenzamos dos programas educativos semanales más para niños en nuestra área y también restablecimos nuestra asociación en dos escuelas locales donde nos invitaron a brindar comidas diarias, acompañar al personal y a los padres con capacitación continua y sesiones de apoyo.

As if that was not enough excitement, this month the MARKED soccer team held its first practices as well as training intensives with specialist Coach Luis. The team is undefeated and just this week was invited to play in the city at a local tournament, giving them the opportunity to show off their hard work and share our culture with other players which for us, is the greatest victory.

Como si eso fuera poco emocionante, este mes el equipo de fútbol MARKED tuvo sus primeros entrenamientos así como intensivos de entrenamiento con el especialista en entrenar, Coach Luis. El equipo no ha perdido y apenas esta semana fue invitado a jugar en la ciudad en un torneo local, dándoles la oportunidad de mostrar su arduo trabajo y compartir nuestra cultura con otros jugadores, lo que para nosotros es la mayor victoria.

Though we are just a couple of weeks into September so far, it has already been such a significant month, marking a season of new beginnings and planting seeds while also, as fall so typically is, a season of harvest too. Seeing the parents at our partner schools advocate for their children, hearing the kids encourage and congratulate others on the soccer field, and watching hardened hearts grow soft, are all examples of the fruit we are seeing. So, we celebrate.

We celebrate Mexico, we celebrate new opportunities to serve our communities and we look toward the future with such hope knowing the best is yet to come.

Aunque hasta ahora solo llevamos un par de semanas de septiembre, ya ha sido un mes muy importante, que marca una temporada de nuevos comienzos y plantación de semillas y, al mismo tiempo, como suele ser el otoño, también una temporada de cosecha. Ver a los padres de nuestras escuelas asociadas defender a sus hijos, escuchar a los niños alentar y felicitar a otros en el campo de fútbol y ver cómo los corazones endurecidos se ablandan, son todos ejemplos del fruto que estamos viendo.

Entonces, celebramos. Celebramos a México, celebramos nuevas oportunidades para servir a nuestras comunidades y miramos hacia el futuro con tanta esperanza sabiendo que lo mejor está por venir.

These were the words that resounded at our ribbon-cutting ceremony. This week was a big one in MARKED history as we opened our very first school, “Preescolar Nueva Galicia” which holds classes at our community center in San Pedro.

Estas fueron las palabras que resonaron en nuestra ceremonia de inauguración. Esta semana fue importante en la historia de MARKED ya que abrimos nuestra primera escuela, “Preescolar Nueva Galicia”, que imparte clases en nuestro centro comunitario en San Pedro.

As our staff, “padrinos” (community sponsors/advocates) and school board (made up of parents of students) stood together at the gates of Casa MARKED to officially open the school, our directors and founders spoke but surprisingly, one of the moms spoke up too. She had written out a letter of thanks to read and express the sentiments from all the parents. She mentioned in her letter that through the process of opening the school, they realized the power of dreaming and working towards those dreams because when we all come together, they aren't just dreams, with the right collaboration and resources, they can become a reality!

Mientras nuestro personal, los “padrinos” (patrocinadores/defensores de la comunidad) y la junta escolar (compuesta por padres de estudiantes) se reunieron en las puertas de Casa MARKED para abrir oficialmente la escuela, nuestros directores y fundadores hablaron pero, sorprendentemente, una de las mamás habló también. Había escrito una carta de agradecimiento para leer y expresar los sentimientos de todos los padres. Mencionó en su carta que a través del proceso de apertura de la escuela, se dieron cuenta del poder de soñar y trabajar para lograr esos sueños porque cuando todos nos unimos, no son solo sueños; con la colaboración y los recursos adecuados, ¡pueden convertirse en una realidad!

Happy tears were shed as our directors, founder, and even the representatives from CONAFE spoke. This school was an answer to prayer, a dream fulfilled and a reminder to all that when we come together, we can do so much more. Together, we are building something much grander than a classroom of students, we are laying the foundation for a brighter tomorrow. We are empowering these children and their families so that the ceilings we reach will be the floor of the upcoming generation.

Lloramos con lágrimas de felicidad mientras hablaban nuestros directores, fundadora e incluso los representantes de CONAFE. Esta escuela fue una respuesta a la oración, un sueño cumplido y un recordatorio para todos de que cuando nos unimos, podemos hacer mucho más. Juntos, estamos construyendo algo mucho más grandioso que un salón de clases de estudiantes; estamos construyendo la base para un mañana mejor. Estamos empoderando a estos niños y a sus familias para que los techos que alcancemos sean el piso de la próxima generación.

Though it was a busy week, there was such peace. The first week of classes went so smoothly. The children were excited to go into their classroom and not even one tear was shed as they waved goodbye to their parents. So many of these children formed part of the Mommy & Me group since they were little babies which means they are familiar with the teacher, our space, our rules, and routines.

Aunque fue una semana ocupada, había mucha paz. La primera semana de clases transcurrió sin problemas. Los niños estaban emocionados de entrar a su salón de clases y ni siquiera se lloró una lágrima mientras se despedían de sus padres. Muchos de estos niños formaron parte del grupo de educación inicial que eran pequeños, lo que significa que conocen nuestra maestra, el espacio, nuestras reglas y rutinas.

We cannot wait to share more about our kindergarten as well as our other partner schools as the school year gets going! We met with parents of the partner schools this week as each year they must vote to implement our programs and agree to their part of the partnership. These interactions with whole families are so important to us because our heart is not just to offer a one-size-fits-all solution to each community but instead, hear their hopes, help evaluate their needs and create a plan of action for healthy, long-lasting change, not just this year but for the years to come.

¡Estamos ansiosos por compartir más sobre nuestro preescolar y nuestras otras escuelas aliadas a medida que avanza el año escolar! Nos reunimos con los padres de las escuelas aliadas esta semana, ya que cada año deben votar para implementar nuestros programas y aceptar su parte de la asociación. Estas interacciones con familias enteras son muy importantes para nosotros porque nuestro corazón no es solo ofrecer una solución única para cada comunidad, sino escuchar sus esperanzas, ayudar a evaluar sus necesidades y crear un plan de acción para una vida sana, un cambio duradero, no sólo este año sino en los años venideros.

We are just a week away from the beginning of the school year and official opening of the public kindergarten on our property. Each day we are getting closer to meeting the goal of clearing our wish list and preparing the very best classroom for the students including this beautiful mural!

Estamos a solo una semana del comienzo del año escolar y la apertura oficial del preescolar público en nuestra propiedad. ¡Cada día nos acercamos más a la meta de borrar nuestra lista de deseos y preparar el mejor salón de clases para los estudiantes, incluido este hermoso mural!

The idea of the mural actually came from the parents of our soon-to-be students. Over the past month, we have had multiple meetings with them, creating a space for them to express their ideas and dreams for the school as well as their children’s futures.

La idea del mural en realidad vino de los padres de nuestros futuros estudiantes. Durante el último mes, hemos tenido varias reuniones con ellos, creando un espacio para que expresen sus ideas y sueños para la escuela y el futuro de sus hijos.

At the very first meeting, one mom mentioned the idea of a train with numbers and many other parents chimed in saying they liked the idea too. We loved the idea and this week, were overjoyed to make this request a reality! But, we did not just stop with a train..

En la primera reunión, una mamá mencionó la idea de un tren con números y muchos otros padres intervinieron diciendo que a ellos también les gustaba la idea. Nos encantó la idea y esta semana, ¡estuvimos encantados de hacer realidad esta solicitud! Pero, no nos detuvimos solo con un tren..

This mural is not just colors painted on a wall, it symbolizes so much more! It is a beautiful representation of collaboration, of dreams, and marks the start of a brighter future for these children who we welcomed in to see their class this week! Alongside their parents, they got to do some art activities and get used to being in their new school. 

Este mural no son solo colores pintados en una pared, ¡simboliza mucho más! ¡Es una hermosa representación de colaboración, de sueños y marca el comienzo de un futuro más brillante para estos niños a quienes les dimos la bienvenida para ver su clase esta semana! Junto a sus padres, pudieron hacer algunas actividades artísticas y acostumbrarse a estar en su nueva escuela.

On Friday evening, we finished off a busy week with a community movie night, open to anyone interested in coming. Of course we had a great turn out! We enjoyed popcorn and watching some VeggieTales all together until some rain came. Despite the abrupt ending, it was a special time seeing families come to Casa MARKED to enjoy time together and give the children the opportunity to see something on a big screen for the very first time! We will certainly plan more movie nights in the future!

El viernes por la noche, terminamos una semana ocupada con una noche de cine comunitario, abierta a cualquier persona interesada en asistir. ¡Por supuesto que tuvimos una gran participación! Disfrutamos de las palomitas de maíz y vimos algunos VeggieTales todos juntos hasta que llegó un poco de lluvia. A pesar del final abrupto, fue un momento especial ver a las familias venir a Casa MARKED para disfrutar del tiempo juntos y darles a los niños la oportunidad de ver algo en una pantalla grande por primera vez. ¡Sin duda planearemos más noches de cine en el futuro!

These communities are being transformed. The interest in education, the willingness to dream and the excitement to spend a night together as family, off the streets are things that did not happen in these areas before. What joy it is to witness and what fun it is to be a part of lives being MARKED forever.

Estas comunidades están siendo transformandas. El interés por la educación, las ganas de soñar y el esfuerzo para pasar una noche juntos en familia, fuera de la calle, son cosas que antes no pasaban en estas zonas. Qué alegría es presenciar y qué divertido es ser parte de vidas marcadas (MARKED) para siempre.

Just two more weeks | Solo faltan dos semanas

We are officially two weeks out from the grand opening of Kinder MARKED, a public kindergarten that we will be opening on our property at Casa MARKED in the village of San Pedro. It is a dream come true for us to have this opportunity! In order to get ready for students, staff has been busy transforming what was once a storage room into a classroom!

Estamos oficialmente a dos semanas de la gran inauguración de Kinder MARKED, un jardín de infantes público que abriremos en nuestra propiedad en Casa MARKED en el pueblo de San Pedro. ¡Es un sueño hecho realidad para nosotros tener esta oportunidad! ¡Con el fin de prepararse para los estudiantes, el personal ha estado ocupado transformando lo que alguna vez fue una sala de almacenamiento en un salón de clases!

This means the team has been hard at work reorganizing storage, deep cleaning every inch of the space and giving the walls a fresh coat of paint. Now, we have a classroom and it´s time to fill it with supplies like pencils, crayons, glue, and books which is something we would love to get some help with! Just over the weekend, we received donations to purchase the tables, chairs and even a large whiteboard. Each day we are getting closer to clearing our wish list but we need your help!

Esto significa que el equipo ha estado trabajando arduamente reorganizando el almacenamiento, limpiando a fondo cada centímetro del espacio y dando a las paredes una nueva capa de pintura. Big news… are you ready?

Grandes noticias… ¿están listos?

We have been given the immense privilege and honor to open a kindergarten! Just a few days ago, we were approached by CONAFE, Consejo Nacional de Fomento Educativo ("National Council for Education Development") that works to design educational programs for marginalized communities in Mexico.

¡Se nos ha dado el inmenso privilegio y el honor de abrir un jardín de niños! Hace apenas unos días, CONAFE, el Consejo Nacional de Fomento Educativo, que trabaja para diseñar programas educativos para comunidades marginadas en México, se acercó a nosotros.

You see, enrollment for the coming school year is at an all-time high for San Pedro, the village where our base and community center, Casa MARKED is located. The local public “Jardin de niños” or kindergartens, are full which means the government was looking for an adequate space where another could be opened.

Lo que pasa es que los números de inscripciones para el próximo año escolar está muy altos en San Pedro, el pueblo donde se encuentra nuestra base y centro comunitario, Casa MARKED. Los jardines de niños, o, preescolares públicos locales están llenos, así que el gobierno estaba buscando un espacio adecuado donde se pudiera abrir otro.

We are overjoyed to announce that MARKED will be partnering with CONAFE to fill this need in our community. Thankfully, CONAFE is generously helping pay the salary of our group teacher, Angelica who you probably recognize from the Mommy & Me courses as well as some uniforms and books for the future students of the MARKED Kínder.

Estamos encantados de anunciar que MARKED se asociará con CONAFE para satisfacer esta necesidad en nuestra comunidad. However, we have the task of preparing the space which means reorganizing our storage, purchasing tables, chairs and all of the other items needed to transform this room into a welcoming, fully equipped classroom by the end of August when the school year starts, in just three short weeks.

Our staff has been busy cleaning, painting, reorganizing our storage and assessing what can be used for this school and what our needs are. This opportunity is huge. The statistics show the incredible impact quality education can have on both an individual and community level. It's not just about putting diplomas in hands but useful tools, practical skills, and life values.  Each of our programs are designed to immerse individuals in MARKED culture, one that they can carry with them wherever they go. This kindergarten not only allows us to impact the lives of the students but it also gives us direct contact with parents, teachers, and government workers, widening the circle of people we serve and our sphere of influence.

Esta oportunidad es enorme. Las estadísticas muestran el increíble impacto que la educación de calidad puede tener tanto a nivel individual como comunitario. Our dream is for this kindergarten to be a safe, encouraging learning environment for students, their families and even other educators in the area. We hope that by inviting teachers from other local schools for meals, workshops, and events, that they might be inspired and be given the confidence to try new methods and strategies with their students too.

Nuestro sueño es que este kínder sea un entorno de aprendizaje seguro y alentador para los estudiantes, sus familias e incluso para otros educadores de la zona. Esperamos que al invitar a maestros de otras escuelas locales a comidas, talleres y eventos en nuestro kínder, puedan ser inspirados y tener la confianza para probar nuevos métodos y estrategias con sus estudiantes también.

Though a contract has been signed just for the 2023-2024 school year, there is an option to extend and expand the MARKED Kínder after this pilot year. This sparks even more excitement in us and at the same time, reminds us of what a truly incredible opportunity this project is.

Aunque se ha firmado un contrato solo para el año escolar 2023-2024, existe la opción de extender y ampliar el Kínder MARKED después de este año piloto. Esto genera aún más entusiasmo en nosotros y, al mismo tiempo, nos recuerda la oportunidad realmente increíble que es este proyecto.

Partner School Graudations! | Las graduaciones de nuestras escuelas aliadas

These last few days of July have been spent attending and participating in various graduation ceremonies in the villages where we serve, including our two partner schools! We had the pleasure of handing out each diploma and shaking the hand of every kindergartner at La Peña kindergarten as well as each 6th grader graduating from elementary school in Chalpicote.

¡Estos últimos días de julio los he pasado asistiendo y participando en varias ceremonias de graduación en los pueblos donde servimos, incluidas nuestras dos escuelas aliadas! Tuvimos el placer de entregar cada diploma y dar la mano a cada niño de kínder del jardín de niños La Peña, así como de cada uno de los estudiantes de sexto grado que se graduaron de la escuela primaria en Chalpicote.

To see the children's eyes light up and smile big as their families clapped and whistled loud was beyond special for us. Just a few years ago when we started partnering with schools, classrooms were nearly empty and events were few and far between. Flash forward eight years later, to now,  and we are seeing classrooms full of children and enrollment for next year through the roof! Kids are interested in going to school, parents are engaged in their children's participation at school, and, another huge improvement we are seeing is drop-out rates are falling fast in our partner schools!

Ver los ojos de los niños brillar y las caras sonreír a lo grande mientras sus familias aplaudían y chiflaban fuertemente fue más que especial para nosotros. Hace solo unos años, cuando comenzamos a asociarnos con las escuelas, las aulas estaban casi vacías y los eventos eran pocos y esporádicos. Avancemos ocho años después, hasta ahora, ¡y estamos viendo aulas llenas de niños y la inscripción para el próximo año por las nubes! Los niños están interesados ​​en ir a la escuela, los padres están comprometidos con la participación de sus hijos en la escuela y, otra gran mejora que estamos viendo es que las tasas de abandono escolar están cayendo rápidamente en nuestras escuelas aliadas.

The top students of the class are invited to be the color guard. They must learn how to properly march in unison, carry and parade the flag before leading the pledge and singing the national anthem. | Los mejores estudiantes de la clase están invitados a ser parte de la escolta. It is also culturally typical to perform a song and/or dance at graduation ceremonies. Graduations, along with birthday parties and weddings often have “padrinos”, or close friends and family members that help cover the cost, acting as “godparents” for the event. MARKED was the official “padrino” of the kinder graduation. In addition to their diploma, each child received a special personalized gift from our staff. | Las graduaciones, junto con las fiestas de cumpleaños y las bodas, a menudo tienen “padrinos”, o amigos cercanos y familiares que ayudan a cubrir el costo, actuando como “padrinos” del evento. MARKED fue el “padrino” oficial de la graduación de kinder. Además de su diploma, cada niño recibió un regalo especial personalizado de nuestro personal.

We were overjoyed to see Carlitos graduate along with his classmates. His life is a miracle. If you remember, we asked for your prayers after he was in an accident. He spent an entire month in a coma at the hospital but as you can see, he is healthy, happy and will soon begin elementary school! | Nos llenó de alegría ver a Carlitos graduarse junto con sus compañeros de clase. Su vida es un milagro. Si recuerdas, les pedimos sus oraciones después de que tuvo un accidente. Pasó un mes entero en coma en el hospital, pero como pueden ver, está sano, feliz y ¡pronto comenzará la escuela primaria!

Being invited into schools has gifted MARKED with relationships with more children, families, and leaders in the community. It has given us power of influence and a direct path to empower not just this generation but the ones to come. Each graduation is a sign to us that change is happening. Ser invitado a las escuelas ha dotado a MARKED de relaciones con más niños, familias y líderes en la comunidad. Nos ha dado poder de influencia y un camino directo para empoderar no solo a esta generación sino a las venideras. Cada graduación es una señal para nosotros de que se está produciendo un cambio. La educación se valora y las vidas se ponen en una nueva trayectoria, hacia la esperanza, el crecimiento y la prosperidad.

Though the school year just ended, the next one is around the corner! Thanks to the success of our feeding programs and school partnerships this year, we have the opportunity to do the same for 100 more children next year, starting at the end of August!

Aunque el ciclo escolar acaba de terminar, ¡el próximo está por empezar! Gracias al éxito de nuestros programas de alimentación y alianzas escolares este año, tenemos la oportunidad de hacer lo mismo con 100 niños más el próximo año, ¡a partir de finales de agosto!

Do you hear that? | ¿Escuchas eso?

If you have already seen “The Sound of Freedom”, perhaps you too were deeply moved. If you have not had the chance to see the movie, it’s centered on the story of a man who worked as a US homeland security agent and set out to rescue children from being trafficked. The movie sheds light on the horrors behind human trafficking, revealing truths of an industry we at MARKED are all too familiar with. 

Si ya has visto “El sonido de la libertad”, quizás también te conmovió profundamente. Si no ha tenido la oportunidad de ver la película, se centra en la historia de un hombre que trabajó como agente de seguridad nacional de EE. UU. y se dispuso a rescatar a los niños de la trata. La película arroja luz sobre los horrores detrás de la trata de personas, revelando verdades de una industria con la que MARKED estamos muy familiarizados.

From the very beginning, the mission of MARKED has been to see orphanages emptied, families restored and lives empowered. Over the years, we have partnered with orphanages and worked directly with several individuals who were rescued from abusive situations and others from human trafficking.

Desde el principio, la misión de MARKED ha sido ver orfanatos vaciados, familias restauradas y vidas empoderadas. A lo largo de los años, nos hemos asociado con orfanatos y hemos trabajado directamente con varias personas que fueron rescatadas de situaciones abusivas y otras de la trata de personas.

The mission of MARKED has not changed but our approach has shifted from focusing on reactive responses to being a primarily proactive model. As a result, the majority of our work is preventative. We are going after the root system to locate and eliminate the risk factors well before they have the time to grow into life-altering circumstances or a situation needing rescuing from. We focus on supporting, teaching, and empowering our communities so the threats surrounding them do not win.

La misión de MARKED no ha cambiado, pero nuestro enfoque ha pasado de centrarse en respuestas reactivas a ser un modelo principalmente proactivo. Como resultado, la mayor parte de nuestro trabajo es preventivo. Vamos tras el sistema raíz para localizar y eliminar los factores de riesgo mucho antes de que tengan tiempo de convertirse en circunstancias que alteran la vida o en una situación de la que es necesario rescatar. Nos enfocamos en apoyar, enseñar y empoderar a nuestras comunidades para que las amenazas que las rodean no ganen.

In 2021, A21, an independent anti-trafficking organization, stated that Mexico is the country with the third-highest rate of trafficking against children, only surpassed by Thailand and Cambodia. According to official data, the Mexican government identified 744 trafficking victims in 2021, compared to 673 in 2020 and 658 in 2019, but experts point out that official numbers, though they do reflect a rise in cases each year, don’t reflect the reality, since the vast majority of cases aren’t reported.

En 2021, A21, una organización independiente contra la trata, afirmó que México es el tercer país con la tasa más alta de trata de niños, solo superado por Tailandia y Camboya. Según datos oficiales, el gobierno mexicano identificó 744 víctimas de trata en 2021, en comparación con 673 en 2020 y 658 en 2019, pero los expertos señalan que las cifras oficiales, si bien reflejan un aumento de casos cada año, no reflejan la realidad, ya que la gran mayoría de los casos no son denunciados.

Though statistics and accurate numbers in reports are questionable, the existence of these atrocities in our communities is not.  The villages we serve are home to a vulnerable population along with a significant amount of crime, corruption, and brokenness. The losses and rescues have already been too many.

Aunque las estadísticas y los números precisos en los informes son cuestionables, la existencia de estas atrocidades en nuestras comunidades no lo es. Las aldeas a las que servimos son el hogar de una población vulnerable junto con una cantidad significativa de delincuencia, corrupción y quebrantamiento. Las pérdidas y los rescates ya han sido demasiados.

By opening the doors to Casa MARKED and having a presence in local schools, we are giving choices in what was before, a hopeless situation. Now, families do not have to send their kids out to work in order to feed them, they can receive a meal at school or at our community center. Parents do not have to leave kids at home unsupervised just hoping nothing will happen, they can bring their kids to Casa MARKED to have fun and learn in a safe place, to know freedom.

Al abrir las puertas de Casa MARKED y tener presencia en las escuelas locales, estamos dando opciones en lo que era antes, una situación desesperada. Ahora, las familias no tienen que enviar a sus hijos a trabajar para alimentarlos, pueden recibir una comida en la escuela o en nuestro centro comunitario. Los padres no tienen que dejar a los niños en casa sin supervisión esperando que no pase nada, pueden traer a sus hijos a Casa MARKED para divertirse y aprender en un lugar seguro, para conocer la libertad.

In the movie, as clips of children laughing, playing, eating, and making music rolled on the screen they asked, “Do you hear that? That is the sound of freedom.” In that moment, it was as if the movie gifted us the language to share with you how we hear the chains of generational cycles of poverty weakening each day.

En la película, mientras los clips de niños riendo, jugando, comiendo y haciendo música aparecían en la pantalla, preguntaban: “¿Escuchas eso? Ese es el sonido de la libertad”. En ese momento, fue como si la película nos regalara el lenguaje para compartir con ustedes cómo escuchamos las cadenas de los ciclos generacionales de pobreza debilitándose cada día.

At MARKED, what does freedom sound like?

More kids, more fun | Más niños, más diversión

For many students, the 2022-2023 school year has ended and those who are still in classes should be finishing up this week. This means Casa MARKED is already experiencing an increase in daily numbers!

Para muchos estudiantes, el año escolar 2022-2023 ha terminado y los que aún están en clases deberían terminar esta semana. ¡Esto significa que Casa MARKED ya está experimentando un aumento en los números diarios!

Not only are the kids we normally see each day wanting to arrive earlier and stay longer, we are also getting to see kids and teens that we do not get to see as often. Many young people in our communities work to help support their families so between their jobs and school as well as responsibilities at home, they cannot make it to Casa MARKED during the school year.

Los niños que normalmente vemos todos los días no solo quieren llegar más temprano y quedarse más tiempo, sino que también estamos viendo niños y adolescentes que no vemos con tanta frecuencia. Muchos jóvenes en nuestras comunidades trabajan para ayudar a mantener a sus familias, entre sus trabajos y la escuela, así como las responsabilidades en el hogar, no pueden asistir a Casa MARKED durante el año escolar.

In just one shift, we welcomed back 11 children we had not seen for months! | En un solo turno, dimos la bienvenida a 11 niños que no habíamos visto por meses

During summer though, that changes. We are delighted to welcome kids back after weeks, months, or even longer without seeing them. It is also so amazing to us that no matter how much time passes, they come back. They know that they are safe with us and that they are part of our MARKED family.

Sin embargo, durante el verano, eso cambia. Estamos encantados de volver a ver a los niños después de semanas, meses o incluso más tiempo sin verlos. También nos sorprende tanto que no importa cuánto tiempo pase, vuelven. Saben que están a salvo con nosotros y que son parte de nuestra familia MARKED.

This is Kimberly, she is 11 years old and sells plants to help support her family. Each day she pushes her wheelbarrow full of flowers to sell from her home in La Peña all the way up to the main square in San Pedro, about a 40 minute walk.  After selling all she can, she rushes home to change and get to school for the afternoon shift. We are just a couple blocks from the main square where she sells so she likes to stop by Casa MARKED. We love spending time with her and of course buy some of her beautiful plants as often as we can. This week we got some roses from her! We cannot wait to see her more as well as the other children that have some more free time to come to MARKED now that they are on summer break!

Ella es Kimberly, tiene 11 años y vende plantas para ayudar a mantener a su familia. Cada día empuja su carretilla llena de flores para vender desde su casa en La Peña hasta la plaza principal de San Pedro, a unos 40 minutos a pie. Después de vender todo lo que puede, corre a casa para cambiarse y llegar a la escuela para el turno de la tarde. Estamos a solo un par de cuadras de la plaza principal donde vende, por lo que le gusta pasar por Casa MARKED. Nos encanta pasar tiempo con ella y, por supuesto, comprar algunas de sus hermosas plantas tan a menudo como podemos. Esta semana nos llegaron unas rosas de ella! ¡No podemos esperar a verla más, así como a los otros niños que tienen más tiempo libre para venir a MARKED ahora que están de vacaciones de verano!

It fills us with such joy to have Casa MARKED filled with new and familiar faces. Catching up with children and teens we have gone so long without seeing and getting the opportunity to share a meal, play, and create new memories with them is so very special.

Nos llena de alegría tener Casa MARKED llena de caras nuevas y conocidas. Ponernos al tanto con niños y adolescentes que hemos pasado tanto tiempo sin ver y tener la oportunidad de compartir una comida, jugar y crear nuevos recuerdos con ellos es muy especial.

Highlight of the week | Lo destacado de la semana

Hosting the closing ceremony for the Mommy & Me course was without a doubt, the highlight of the week. We had the chance to celebrate and honor the 12 mothers along with their children who have faithfully attended class each week at Casa MARKED. 

La celebración de la ceremonia de clausura del curso de educación inicial fue, sin duda, lo más destacado de la semana. Tuvimos la oportunidad de celebrar y honrar a las 12 madres junto con sus hijos que han asistido fielmente a clase cada semana en Casa MARKED.

The preparations for the ceremony began the day before, setting up tables, blowing up balloons and getting decorations placed. Our staff, along with others in the community, worked to make the space look festive. 

Los preparativos de la ceremonia comenzaron el día anterior, poniendo mesas, inflando globos y colocando adornos. Nuestro personal, junto con otros miembros de la comunidad, trabajaron para que el espacio se viera festivo.

The day of the event, Chuy and some other volunteers started cooking early in the day, preparing an extra special celebratory meal. Then, the final touches to decorations were made and it was time for the ceremony! 

El día del evento, Chuy y algunos otros voluntarios comenzaron a cocinar temprano en el día, preparando una comida de celebración extra especial. Luego, se hicieron los toques finales a las decoraciones y llegó el momento de la ceremonia.

Each of the mothers and their children arrived in their nicest clothes, hair slicked back and ready to celebrate one another. We recognized each of the mothers for their commitment to the program and their faithfulness in showing up to class each week, participating, and working hard to learn for and alongside their children.

Cada una de las madres y sus hijos llegaron con sus mejores galas, el cabello peinado hacia atrás y listos para celebrarse unos a otros. Reconocimos a cada una de las madres por su compromiso con el programa y su fidelidad al presentarse a clase cada semana, participar y trabajar arduamente para aprender para y junto a sus hijos.

Following the ceremony, of course we shared a delicious meal. Seeing Casa MARKED full of families gathered around the table, smiling and laughing together, celebrating growth and learning, creating positive memories together was like seeing the dreams of the community coming true. 

Después de la ceremonia, por supuesto compartimos una deliciosa comida. Ver Casa MARKED llena de familias reunidas alrededor de la mesa, sonriendo y riendo juntas, celebrando el crecimiento y el aprendizaje, creando recuerdos positivos juntos fue como ver los sueños de la comunidad hacerse realidad.

We are so thankful for how Casa MARKED has become a space where people are inspired, empowered and given hope.

Estamos muy agradecidos por cómo Casa MARKED se ha convertido en un espacio donde las personas se inspiran, empoderan y dan esperanza.

It starts with consistency | Empieza con la constancia

Over the last few days, multiple people have commented to us about the behavior of children in MARKED programs. “They are so well-behaved!, “They are being so kind to one another!” or “They are so different from the other kids in the area!” yet our kids live in the same places, see the same things, and experience the same challenges so what could the difference possibly be? Perhaps, consistency.

En los últimos días, múltiples personas nos han comentado sobre el comportamiento de los niños en los programas de MARKED. “¡Se portan tan bien!”, “¡Están siendo tan amables entre ellos!” o “¡Son tan diferentes de los otros niños de la zona!”. sin embargo, nuestros hijos viven en los mismos lugares, ven las mismas cosas y experimentan los mismos desafíos, entonces, ¿cuál podría ser la diferencia? Tal vez, la constancia.

If we consider what the children and families experience on a normal day, it would quickly become clear how unpredictable it is. Where will the next meal come from? When will we be able to find better work? When will the violence outside stop? Not knowing and not having control is undeniably hard. For a child who may not have the skill or words to communicate the resulting negative emotions, may express him or herself unintentionally through behavior.

Si consideramos lo que los niños y las familias experimentan en un día normal, rápidamente quedaría claro cuán impredecible es. ¿De dónde vendrá la próxima comida? ¿Cuándo podremos encontrar un mejor trabajo? ¿Cuándo cesará la violencia en el exterior? No saber y no tener el control es innegablemente difícil. Para un niño que puede no tener la habilidad o las palabras para comunicar las emociones negativas resultantes, puede expresarse a sí mismo sin querer a través del comportamiento.

It is said that all behavior is communication. Maybe the child wants attention, maybe the child is angry, perhaps the child is having trouble processing something scary. Each child comes to MARKED, to our partner schools or sports programs with different feelings and experiences from their time at home or outside. Neither they nor we can control what happens in life and perhaps the only thing we can truly do is be present, to show up and to keep showing up.

Se dice que todo comportamiento es comunicación. Tal vez el niño quiere atención, tal vez el niño está enojado, tal vez el niño tiene problemas para procesar algo aterrador. Cada niño llega a MARKED, a nuestras escuelas asociadas o programas deportivos con diferentes sentimientos y experiencias de su tiempo en casa o al aire libre. Ni ellos ni nosotros podemos controlar lo que sucede en la vida y tal vez lo único que podamos hacer verdaderamente es estar presente, mostrarnos y seguir apareciendo.

We aim to offer this consistency in each of our programs and it's not just people outside of MARKED that note a difference, of course, we can see the fruit of it ourselves, too. This week, a young boy showed up to “volunteer” at the preschool and help serve meals. This was unusual because the volunteers are typically the parents. However, he said he wanted to come because his mom was on the schedule to volunteer that day but was feeling sick and couldn't make it. He was ready, eager and got straight to work helping serve up the plates.

Nuestro objetivo es ofrecer esta consistencia en cada uno de nuestros programas y no son solo las personas fuera de MARKED las que notan la diferencia, por supuesto, nosotros mismos también podemos ver el fruto de esto. Esta semana, un niño se presentó como "voluntario" en el preescolar y ayudó a servir las comidas. Esto fue inusual porque los voluntarios suelen ser los padres. Sin embargo, dijo que quería venir porque su madre estaba programada para ser voluntaria ese día, pero se sentía enferma y no pudo asistir. Estaba listo, ansioso y se puso a trabajar de inmediato ayudando a servir los platos.

We were so surprised by the boy showing up and even more so that the mother, amidst not feeling well, would remember her commitment to our program and the desire to keep things going, no matter what.

Nos sorprendió mucho que apareciera el niño y más aún que la madre, en medio de no sentirse bien, recordara su compromiso con nuestro programa y el deseo de seguir adelante, pase lo que pase.

We are reminded again that actions speak louder than words. Showing up and being present is not always easy or simple but it is crucial. Consistency is what shows the children and their families that there is hope. The world is full of surprises and challenges yet we have faith and love to depend on.

Se nos recuerda nuevamente que las acciones hablan más que las palabras. Aparecer y estar presente no siempre es fácil o simple, pero es crucial. La consistencia es lo que muestra a los niños y sus familias que hay esperanza. El mundo está lleno de sorpresas y desafíos, pero tenemos fe y amor de los que depender.

Lives forever marked | Vidas marcadas para siempre

If you have ever been to MARKED, you have surely met these three incredible women who form part of our staff in San Pedro. They are humble, hard working women who if you ask them, never imagined to be in the positions they are today. Here is how they came to know MARKED and what they believe MARKED means, in their own words.

Si alguna vez has estado en MARKED, seguro que has conocido a estas tres increíbles mujeres que forman parte de nuestro staff en San Pedro. Son mujeres humildes, trabajadoras que si les preguntas nunca imaginaron estar en los puestos que están hoy. “I met the people from MARKED eight years ago because they came to give out sandwiches in the street and I liked to go down and help line up the kids. One day, Sam invited us to stay.” 

“Conocí a Marked hace 8 años por que venían a dar sándwich por la calle y a mi me gustaba bajar con ellos a ayudar a formar a los niños, un día Sam nos invitó a quedarnos también.”

“I first met MARKED because one of my aunts invited me to the MARKED store at the community center where they were selling clothes. I overheard a little boy asking Sam about soccer practices and a few days later, I came back to talk to Sam and sign up my son for the soccer program. He invited me to be a volunteer and I’ve been here ever since. This year will be four years working with MARKED.

“Conocí a Marked por una tía que me invitó a una tienda de ropa en el centro comunitario. En la tienda escuché a un niño preguntar a Sam sobre los entrenamientos de fútbol y días después regrese con Sam a inscribir a mi hijo a los entrenamientos y me invitó a ser voluntaria y desde ahí no he salido, en esté año cumpliré 4 años en MARKED”.

“I met the people from MARKED at a Children’s Day celebration. They had bounce houses. It was a beautiful celebration and at that time, Luciana was three years old. I remember so well that when I became a widow, I felt supported by you all [MARKED]. You have helped my children move forward. When you guys came [into my life], my husband had been sick for two years already and one of the children went down to get a sandwich for him. Shortly after that he died and I became a volunteer. Since then, I have been here.

Conocí a Marked un día que celebraron un Día del niño que había brincolines, era una fiesta muy bonita en ese tiempo Luciana tenía 3 años. Recuerdo muy bien que cuando quede viuda sentí el apoyo de ustedes y me hay ayudado a sacar a mis hijos adelante, cuando ustedes llegaron mi esposo tenia ya 2 años enfermo y uno de los hijos bajaba a pedir un sándwich para él al poco tiempo murió y pude ser voluntaria y  desde entonces sigo aquí .

From the beginning, we have focused on building relationships, listening to needs and being love to others. We move low and slow, giving food at Casa MARKED and on the streets, welcoming families to events and simply inviting them to be part of our day to day.

Desde el principio, nos hemos enfocado en construir relaciones, escuchar las necesidades y ser amor con los demás. Nos movemos bajo y lento, dando comida en Casa MARKED y en la calle, recibiendo familias en eventos y simplemente invitándolos a ser parte de nuestro día a día.

These three women are just a few examples of how a sandwich, a bouncy house, a store, or even the smallest of interactions can lead to lives forever changed, marked by love.

Estas tres mujeres son solo algunos ejemplos de cómo un sándwich, un brincolín o incluso un entrenamiento de fútbol pueden cambiar vidas para siempre, marcadas por el amor.

It takes a village | Se necesita un pueblo

They say it takes a village to raise a kid. At MARKED, we work to feed, support, teach, and empower hundreds of kids each day which is no small feat. Thankfully, there is a big “village” behind MARKED supporting our work in the communities of San Pedro, La Peña, Agua Caliente and Chalpicote in various ways, each one so valuable.
Dicen que se necesita un pueblo para criar a un niño. En MARKED, trabajamos para alimentar, apoyar, enseñar y empoderar a cientos de niños todos los días, lo cual no es poca cosa. Afortunadamente, hay un gran “pueblo” detrás de MARKED que apoya nuestro trabajo en las comunidades de San Pedro, La Peña, Agua Caliente y Chalpicote de varias maneras, cada una tan valiosa.

This week has been one of record-breaking heat but one family in our “village” in Guadalajara heard we did not have a freezer and generously gifted one to Casa MARKED. Now, we have a deep chest freezer with lots of space which expands our ability to store food as well as cold treats like bolis, a Mexican sort of popsicle frozen in a bag. Just rip off the corner of plastic and they´re ready to enjoy!

Esta semana ha sido de calor récord, pero una familia en nuestro “pueblo” en Guadalajara escuchó que no teníamos un congelador y generosamente regaló uno a Casa MARKED. Ahora, tenemos un congelador profundo con mucho espacio que amplía nuestra capacidad para almacenar alimentos y delicias frías como bolis, una especie de paleta helada mexicana congelada en una bolsa. ¡Solo arranca la esquina del plástico y están listos para disfrutar!

We also have members of our support “village” and key partners that live in other countries. Even though they might not be able to be on the ground here, they know the immense value their contributions have and what a blessing they are to the areas we serve. A few days ago, a package arrived and we let Renata open it as she was the first to arrive to Casa MARKED that morning. She slid off the plastic wrapping to reveal a box of magnetic tiles! You would not believe what this gift means to the children. Each gift comes with a second gift-- the reminder that they have people who care about them, pray for them, and want them to be happy even from miles away.

También tenemos miembros de nuestro “pueblo” de apoyo y socios clave que viven en otros países. Aunque es posible que no puedan estar aquí, saben el inmenso valor que tienen sus contribuciones y la bendición que son para las áreas en las que servimos. Hace unos días llegó un paquete y dejamos que Renata lo abriera ya que ella fue la primera en llegar a Casa MARKED esa mañana. ¡Quitó la envoltura de plástico para revelar una caja de fichas magnéticas! No creerías lo que significa este regalo para los niños. Cada obsequio viene con un segundo obsequio: el recordatorio de que tienen personas que se preocupan por ellos, oran por ellos y quieren que sean felices incluso a kilómetros de distancia.

As if those two surprises were not enough to have us throw up our hands in gratitude with a huge smile, other members of our “village” surprised us this week too! In partnering the local sports programs and helping coach athletic and soccer teams, MARKED has developed a number of friendships with members of the Poncitlán government. The director of sports contacted MARKED this week and the result looked like this…

Como si esas dos sorpresas no fueran suficientes para hacernos levantar las manos en agradecimiento con una gran sonrisa, ¡otros miembros de nuestro “pueblo” también nos sorprendieron esta semana! Al asociarse con los programas deportivos locales y ayudar a entrenar equipos atléticos y de fútbol, ​​MARKED ha desarrollado varias amistades con miembros del gobierno de Poncitlán. It was a day full of fun in which the children got to play with a giant tic-tac-toe, snakes and ladders, jenga, a big bouncy slide and more! They loved every second of it. Thank you to the Muñoz family, James & Marcie with Roots RV Service, Alejandro Salas and the Poncitlán government for being a part of the “village” behind MARKED and for giving us an unforgettable week!

¡Fue un día lleno de diversión en el que los niños jugaron con un juego de gato gigante, serpientes y escaleras, jenga, un gran tobogán trampolín y más! Les encantó cada segundo. ¡Gracias a la familia Muñoz, James & Marcie con Roots RV Service, Alejandro Salas y el gobierno de Poncitlán por ser parte del “pueblo” detrás de MARKED y por darnos una semana inolvidable!

Capable, loved & chosen | Capaz, amado & elegido

Recently, one boy has surprised us. His name is Pedro and this is part of his story.

Recientemente, un chico nos ha sorprendido. Su nombre es Pedro y esta es parte de su historia.

At just 6 years old, Pedro suffered an accident while playing, running and hitting his head very hard. That moment marked his life as the trauma caused him to lose the ability to speak as well as caused long-lasting damage to his eyesight. 

Con tan solo 6 años, Pedro sufrió un accidente mientras jugaba, corría y se golpeaba muy fuerte la cabeza. Ese momento marcó su vida ya que el trauma le hizo perder la capacidad de hablar y le causó daños duraderos en la vista.

We first met Pedro about five years ago, already a few years after his accident. Because communication with him is limited, we do not know all the details of his day to day feelings or interactions at school and home but what we do know is that at MARKED, he is special. 

Conocimos a Pedro por primera vez hace unos cinco años, ya unos años después de su accidente. Debido a que la comunicación con él es limitada, no conocemos todos los detalles de sus sentimientos o interacciones diarias en la escuela y el hogar, pero lo que sí sabemos es que en MARKED, él es especial.

Several studies show that children with disabilities are more likely to be bullied, taken advantage of and abused compared to other children of the same age. In Mexico specifically, public schools do not have special education, services or therapies available and many cases go undetected. It is most common for these children to be ostracized and never given the tools to communicate or contribute to society though often they are very capable with minimal assistance. These risks combined with those associated with living in low-income areas ridden with organized crime, cause children like Pedro to be in an extremely vulnerable position.

Varios estudios muestran que los niños con discapacidades tienen más probabilidades de ser intimidados, aprovechados y abusados ​​en comparación con otros niños de la misma edad. En México específicamente, las escuelas públicas no cuentan con educación especial, servicios o terapias disponibles y muchos casos pasan desapercibidos. Lo más común es que estos niños sean condenados al ostracismo y nunca se les den las herramientas para comunicarse o contribuir a la sociedad, aunque a menudo son muy capaces con una ayuda mínima. Estos riesgos, combinados con los asociados con vivir en áreas de bajos ingresos plagadas de crimen organizado, hacen que los niños como Pedro se encuentren en una posición extremadamente vulnerable.

However, Pedro comes each day to MARKED, a place where he is safe and appreciated. He is surrounded by friends who he plays with every afternoon. Though he does not use words, his actions speak volumes. He laughs, he smiles, he is eager to help and is always the first one to volunteer. 

Sin embargo, Pedro viene todos los días a MARKED, un lugar donde es seguro y apreciado. Está rodeado de amigos con los que juega todas las tardes. Aunque no usa palabras, sus acciones dicen mucho. Se ríe, sonríe, está ansioso por ayudar y siempre es el primero en ofrecerse como voluntario.

Over the last few days, he has taken it upon himself to pick up and bring in the new jugs of water to the kitchen. He has continued to do this for days now and refuses to let anyone help him. It’s his special job that he chose for himself. Against all odds, he has found community in the MARKED family. We know it has not always been easy for him and that outside our doors people may treat him differently but we view him as one of our children and one we love dearly. 

Durante los últimos días, se ha encargado de recoger y traer las nuevas jarras de agua a la cocina. Ha seguido haciendo esto durante días y se niega a dejar que nadie lo ayude. Es su trabajo especial que eligió para sí mismo. Contra todo pronóstico, ha encontrado una comunidad en la familia MARKED. Sabemos que no siempre ha sido fácil para él y que fuera de nuestras puertas la gente puede tratarlo de manera diferente, pero lo vemos como uno de nuestros hijos y uno a quien amamos mucho.

Our community center director spoke these words to Pedro this week: “Even if no one else chooses you, God has chosen you and did so before the world began,” which is a truth [found in Colossians 3, Ephesians 1 and 2, Romans 8] will continue speaking over these children. 

El director de nuestro centro comunitario le dijo estas palabras a Pedro esta semana: “Aunque nadie más te elija, Dios te ha elegido y lo hizo antes de que el mundo existiera”, lo cual es una verdad [que se encuentra en Colosenses 3, Efesios 1 y 2, Romanos 8] seguirá hablando sobre estos niños.

We want Pedro and each person we encounter to know: you are capable, you are loved and you have been chosen.

Queremos que Pedro y cada persona que nos encontremos sepa: eres capaz, eres amado y has sido elegido.

It is so special to see kids who face all kinds of challenges and obstacles find purpose and joy in being part of the MARKED family. Though we are serving hundreds of children and families each week, more are waiting to be reached. A Day in the Life of MARKED | Un día en la vida de MARKED

Many have been asking what a day in the life at MARKED looks like. While every day is a bit different, we do keep our daily programs on a set schedule. So, here is what happens each day at MARKED!

Muchos nos han estado preguntando cómo se ve un día en la vida de MARKED. Si bien cada día es un poco diferente, mantenemos nuestros programas diarios en un horario establecido. Entonces, ¡esto es lo que sucede cada día en MARKED!

9:00 Prep space & food | Preparar el espacio & la comida

Staff arrives at Casa MARKED and starts cleaning up the space.  The house, playground, kitchen, bathroom and patio all need to be disinfected and tidied up. Food also needs to be prepped for drop-off at our partner schools.

El personal llega a Casa MARKED y comienza a limpiar el espacio. La casa, el patio de recreo, la cocina, y el baño necesitan ser desinfectados y ordenados. También es necesario preparar la comida para llevarla a nuestras escuelas aliadas.

10:30 Prep hearts & minds | Preparar nuestros corazones & mentes

Devotional, prayer and meeting with staff to prepare hearts and minds for the day as well as go over the day’s plan. Then it’s time to load up the truck and take food for the first meal drop of the day, at the public preschool in La Peña.

Devocional, oración y reunión con el personal para preparar corazones y mentes para el día y repasar el plan del día. Luego es hora de subir todo a la camioneta y llevar alimentos para la primera entrega de comida del día, en el kínder público de La Peña.

11:00 Door opens | Se abre la puerta

At this time, we officially open up Casa MARKED to the public. The first shift of kids come for our daily program in which they get to play, eat, and learn about God. Shifts allow us to give personalized attention and care to each child who enters. In total, this ends up being just over 150 kids each day!

En este momento, abrimos oficialmente Casa MARKED al público. El primer turno de niños viene para nuestro programa diario en el que pueden jugar, comer y aprender acerca de Dios. Los turnos nos permiten dar atención y cuidado personalizado a cada niño que ingresa. ¡En total, esto termina siendo un poco más de 150 niños por día!

12:00-4:00 Simultaneous programs | Programas simultáneos

This is where our days vary most and normally, staff is split up to cover different tasks. Some stay at Casa MARKED to lead activities with the children like games, crafts, mealtime and a Bible lesson. Others help keep the kitchen in order as clean-up and prep happens! During the late afternoon is also when a couple of staff will head out to other neighboring towns like Agua Caliente to do street ministry and give out sandwiches as well as head to our other partner school, the elementary school in Chalpicote to do another meal-drop and spend time with the people there. Once a week we share donations of produce with our communities and host the Mommy & Me class for mothers and their babies too!

Aquí es donde nuestros días varían más y, normalmente, el personal se divide para cubrir diferentes areas. Algunos se quedan en Casa MARKED para dirigir actividades con los niños como juegos, manualidades, hora de comer y una lección bíblica. ¡Otros ayudan a mantener la cocina en orden mientras se realiza la limpieza y la preparación! Al final de la tarde también es cuando un par de miembros del personal se dirigirán a otros pueblos vecinos como Agua Caliente para hacer ministerio en la calle y repartir sándwiches, así como también se dirigirán a nuestra otra escuela aliada, la escuela primaria en Chalpicote para también traerles comida. y pasar tiempo con la gente de allí. ¡Una vez a la semana compartimos donaciones de productos agrícolas con nuestras comunidades y organizamos la clase de educación inicial para madres y sus bebés también!

4:00 Last shift | Úlitmo turno

Normally, most if not all of our staff is back at Casa MARKED by this point and the last group of children is welcomed in which consists of teens. Surprisingly, it is almost always an all-boys group. They get to choose what the want to do but nearly everyday they come wanting to play soccer and then, it is time for staff to join them for their meal and discipleship time. This is where we take time to pray for one another and go over a Bible passage together.

Normalmente, la mayoría, si no todo, de nuestro personal está de regreso en Casa MARKED para este punto y se da la bienvenida al último grupo de niños que consiste en adolescentes. Sorprendentemente, casi siempre es un grupo de chicos. Pueden elegir lo que quieren hacer, pero casi todos los días vienen con ganas de jugar fútbol y luego, es hora de que el personal se una a ellos para su comida y tiempo de discipulado. Aquí es donde tomamos tiempo para orar unos por otros y repasar juntos un pasaje de la Biblia.

5:00 Doors close & hugs given | Se cierra puerta & se regala abrazos

Casa MARKED technically closes the doors at 5:00pm but staff does not rush out. They ensure everything in the kitchen and patio are put away correctly and that as kids leave, everyone gets a proper goodbye. If you know about the hospitality of Mexicans, you know how long goodbyes can take!

Casa MARKED técnicamente cierra las puertas a las 5:00 p. m., pero el personal no sale corriendo. Se aseguran de que todo en la cocina y el patio se guarden correctamente y que cuando los niños se van, todos se despidan como es debido. Si conoces la hospitalidad de los mexicanos, ¡sabes cuánto tiempo pueden durar las despedidas!

This is a quick look at what a day at MARKED entails. Each day is a little different and there are no shortages of surprises however, one thing remains true we consider every single day a privilege. Each person we come into contact with means we get another opportunity to be love. We care for these communities so deeply and we are beyond thankful for the dedication of our staff and for you, who together make each day of programs at activities at MARKED possible.

Cada día es un poco diferente y no faltan sorpresas, sin embargo, una cosa sigue siendo cierta: consideramos que cada día es un privilegio. Cada persona con la que entramos en contacto significa que tenemos otra oportunidad de ser amor. Nos preocupamos profundamente por estas comunidades y estamos más que agradecidos por la dedicación de nuestro personal y por ustedes, quienes juntos hacen posible cada día de programas en actividades en MARKED.
