Growing programs in Chalpicote | Crecimiento de programas en Chalpicote

As you may already know, MARKED is working across various villages along the banks of Lake Chapala. Our community center, Casa MARKED is located in San Pedro Itzicán and serves as the base for our projects in surrounding areas like La Peña, Agua Caliente and Chalpicote, where this week, we reached an all-time high in the number of people served.

Como quizá ya lo sabes, MARKED está trabajando en varios pueblos a lo largo de las orillas del lago de Chapala. Nuestro centro comunitario, Casa MARKED, está ubicado en San Pedro Itzicán y sirve como base para nuestros proyectos por la zona, como La Peña, Agua Caliente y Chalpicote, donde esta semana pudimos atender a la cantidad de personas más alta de todo nuestro tiempo en esta comunidad.

Each week for a little over a year, we have spent time in Chalpicote´s one elementary school, where we were invited in by the director to support the school. Our team has worked hard to stretch our resources as far as possible in order to bring meals to the 100 students as often as we can, minimum once a week.

Cada semana durante poco más de un año, hemos pasado tiempo en la única escuela primaria de Chalpicote, donde fuimos invitados por el director para apoyar a la escuela. Nuestro equipo ha trabajado arduamente para aprovechar nuestros recursos lo más posible para poder llevar comidas a los 100 estudiantes con la mayor frecuencia posible, mínimo una vez por semana.

In addition to partnering with the school, over the past year we have spent time in the streets, building relationships with the families who live there, praying for them, sharing devotionals with them and of course bringing snacks and sandwiches as often as we can. When we first started, we brought about 100 sandwiches but when people heard about our weekly visits, more and more gathered each time. This week, we gave out over 350.

Además de asociarnos con la escuela, durante el año pasado pasamos tiempo en las calles, construyendo relaciones con las familias que viven allí, orando por ellos, compartiendo devocionales con ellos y, por supuesto, llevándoles snacks y sándwiches tan a menudo como podíamos. Cuando empezamos, trajimos alrededor de 100 sándwiches, pero cuando la gente se enteró de nuestras visitas semanales, cada vez se reunieron más y más. Esta semana repartimos más de 350.

Also this week, thanks to all of you in Guadalajara and Poncitlán that generously gave donations of clothes, shoes, and toys, we were able to hold our first Tienda MARKED (pop-up store) in the streets of Chalpicote. Thanks to you, our parnters, friends and families, the MARKED movement continues to grow, sparking transformation in multiple communities, reaching thousands of people each week. Our hope is that in Chalpicote, whose very name translates to “the wave splashing onto the rock” that we can usher in waves of positive change that ripple with dignity, belonging, hope and joy throughout the village, across Lake Chapala and beyond!

También esta semana, gracias a todos ustedes en Guadalajara y Poncitlán que generosamente donaron ropa, zapatos y juguetes, pudimos realizar nuestra primera Tienda MARKED en las calles de Chalpicote. Gracias a ustedes, nuestros socios, amigos y familiares, el movimiento MARKED continúa creciendo, generando transformación en múltiples comunidades y llegando a miles de personas cada semana. Nuestra esperanza es que en Chalpicote, cuyo mismo nombre se traduce como “la ola que salpica en la roca”, podamos marcar el comienzo de olas de cambio positivo que se propaguen con dignidad, pertenencia, esperanza y alegría por todo el pueblo, a través del lago Chapala y más allá.

Today marks our 12th anniversary! What an incredible 12 years it has been.

¡Hoy se cumple nuestro 12º aniversario! Qué increíbles 12 años han sido.

When MARKED was first established, we were partnering with just one other institution- a children´s home and were reaching a humble 80 children through our support network. At that time, with those now seemingly small numbers, was a beautiful beginning to a movement that has grown significantly.

Cuando se estableció MARKED por primera vez, nos asociábamos solo con otra institución: un hogar para niños y estábamos llegando a unos humildes 80 niños a través de nuestra red de apoyo. En ese momento, con esos números ahora aparentemente pequeños, fue un hermoso comienzo para un movimiento que ha crecido significativamente.

Now, we directly serve over 300 children each day. We offer nutritious meals at our local public partner schools and from our very own community center, Casa MARKED. We also support community sports programs and coach our own soccer teams too. We offer weekly educational programs like our literacy club and afterschool tutoring class.

Ahora atendemos directamente a más de 300 niños cada día. Ofrecemos comidas nutritivas en las escuelas públicas locales aliadas con MARKED y en nuestro propio centro comunitario, Casa MARKED. También apoyamos programas deportivos comunitarios e incluso, entrenamos a nuestros propios equipos de fútbol. Ofrecemos programas educativos semanales como nuestro club de lectoescritura y clases de regularización por la tarde.

Over the years, we have partnered with dozens of local schools, churches, children´s homes and even had the privilege to partner with local government all with the goal of seeing negative generational cycles broken and families restored! This year though, was a breakthrough year in so many ways- starting our own school, being invited to serve in a neighboring village, and seeing the fruits of the seeds that have been sown over the years.

A lo largo de los años, nos hemos asociado con docenas de escuelas locales, iglesias, hogares para niños e incluso hemos tenido el privilegio de trabajar junto con el gobierno local, ¡todo con el objetivo de romper los ciclos generacionales negativos y restaurar las familias! Sin embargo, este año fue un gran avance en muchos sentidos: comenzar nuestra propia escuela, ser invitados a servir en un pueblo vecino y ver los frutos de las semillas que se han sembrado a lo largo de los años.

We are just so thankful. It is a privilege and an honor to serve these communities. Each day we are so grateful to have the opportunity to teach, train, equip and empower at-risk families. The victories, the salvations, the advances, and the growth of this year isn´t just ours to celebrate, it´s all yours too. Thanks to you and every other person who has joined the MARKED movement, lives are being transformed, roots mended and families made whole.

Estamos muy agradecidos. Es un privilegio y un honor servir a estas comunidades. Cada día estamos muy agradecidos de tener la oportunidad de enseñar, capacitar, equipar y empoderar a familias en riesgo. Las victorias, las salvaciones, los avances y el crecimiento de este año no son solo nuestros para celebrar, son todos tuyos también. Do you hear that? | ¿Escuchas eso?

If you have already seen “The Sound of Freedom”, perhaps you too were deeply moved. If you have not had the chance to see the movie, it’s centered on the story of a man who worked as a US homeland security agent and set out to rescue children from being trafficked. The movie sheds light on the horrors behind human trafficking, revealing truths of an industry we at MARKED are all too familiar with. 

Si ya has visto “El sonido de la libertad”, quizás también te conmovió profundamente. Si no ha tenido la oportunidad de ver la película, se centra en la historia de un hombre que trabajó como agente de seguridad nacional de EE. UU. y se dispuso a rescatar a los niños de la trata. La película arroja luz sobre los horrores detrás de la trata de personas, revelando verdades de una industria con la que MARKED estamos muy familiarizados.

From the very beginning, the mission of MARKED has been to see orphanages emptied, families restored and lives empowered. Over the years, we have partnered with orphanages and worked directly with several individuals who were rescued from abusive situations and others from human trafficking.

Desde el principio, la misión de MARKED ha sido ver orfanatos vaciados, familias restauradas y vidas empoderadas. A lo largo de los años, nos hemos asociado con orfanatos y hemos trabajado directamente con varias personas que fueron rescatadas de situaciones abusivas y otras de la trata de personas.

The mission of MARKED has not changed but our approach has shifted from focusing on reactive responses to being a primarily proactive model. As a result, the majority of our work is preventative. We are going after the root system to locate and eliminate the risk factors well before they have the time to grow into life-altering circumstances or a situation needing rescuing from. We focus on supporting, teaching, and empowering our communities so the threats surrounding them do not win.

La misión de MARKED no ha cambiado, pero nuestro enfoque ha pasado de centrarse en respuestas reactivas a ser un modelo principalmente proactivo. Como resultado, la mayor parte de nuestro trabajo es preventivo. Vamos tras el sistema raíz para localizar y eliminar los factores de riesgo mucho antes de que tengan tiempo de convertirse en circunstancias que alteran la vida o en una situación de la que es necesario rescatar. Nos enfocamos en apoyar, enseñar y empoderar a nuestras comunidades para que las amenazas que las rodean no ganen.

In 2021, A21, an independent anti-trafficking organization, stated that Mexico is the country with the third-highest rate of trafficking against children, only surpassed by Thailand and Cambodia. According to official data, the Mexican government identified 744 trafficking victims in 2021, compared to 673 in 2020 and 658 in 2019, but experts point out that official numbers, though they do reflect a rise in cases each year, don’t reflect the reality, since the vast majority of cases aren’t reported.

En 2021, A21, una organización independiente contra la trata, afirmó que México es el tercer país con la tasa más alta de trata de niños, solo superado por Tailandia y Camboya. Según datos oficiales, el gobierno mexicano identificó 744 víctimas de trata en 2021, en comparación con 673 en 2020 y 658 en 2019, pero los expertos señalan que las cifras oficiales, si bien reflejan un aumento de casos cada año, no reflejan la realidad, ya que la gran mayoría de los casos no son denunciados.

Though statistics and accurate numbers in reports are questionable, the existence of these atrocities in our communities is not.  The villages we serve are home to a vulnerable population along with a significant amount of crime, corruption, and brokenness. The losses and rescues have already been too many.

Aunque las estadísticas y los números precisos en los informes son cuestionables, la existencia de estas atrocidades en nuestras comunidades no lo es. Las aldeas a las que servimos son el hogar de una población vulnerable junto con una cantidad significativa de delincuencia, corrupción y quebrantamiento. Las pérdidas y los rescates ya han sido demasiados.

By opening the doors to Casa MARKED and having a presence in local schools, we are giving choices in what was before, a hopeless situation. Now, families do not have to send their kids out to work in order to feed them, they can receive a meal at school or at our community center. Parents do not have to leave kids at home unsupervised just hoping nothing will happen, they can bring their kids to Casa MARKED to have fun and learn in a safe place, to know freedom.

Al abrir las puertas de Casa MARKED y tener presencia en las escuelas locales, estamos dando opciones en lo que era antes, una situación desesperada. Ahora, las familias no tienen que enviar a sus hijos a trabajar para alimentarlos, pueden recibir una comida en la escuela o en nuestro centro comunitario. Los padres no tienen que dejar a los niños en casa sin supervisión esperando que no pase nada, pueden traer a sus hijos a Casa MARKED para divertirse y aprender en un lugar seguro, para conocer la libertad.

In the movie, as clips of children laughing, playing, eating, and making music rolled on the screen they asked, “Do you hear that? That is the sound of freedom.” In that moment, it was as if the movie gifted us the language to share with you how we hear the chains of generational cycles of poverty weakening each day.

En la película, mientras los clips de niños riendo, jugando, comiendo y haciendo música aparecían en la pantalla, preguntaban: “¿Escuchas eso? Ese es el sonido de la libertad”. En ese momento, fue como si la película nos regalara el lenguaje para compartir con ustedes cómo escuchamos las cadenas de los ciclos generacionales de pobreza debilitándose cada día.

At MARKED, what does freedom sound like?

Laughter while enjoying a meal together

May these sounds of freedom resound, loud for the entire Rivera Chapala, all of Mexico, and the world beyond to hear.

Behind each statistic we share are individuals, each with a unique experience and a different story to tell. Numbers could not possibly encapsulate the transformation we see day to day or properly quantify just how much is happening in our communities. However, numbers do help us plan, budget, and share more information about MARKED with our friends like you! So, here is a glance at some numbers from the past week.

Detrás de cada estadística que compartimos hay individuos, cada uno con una experiencia única y una historia diferente que contar. Los números no podrían encapsular la transformación que vemos día a día o cuantificar adecuadamente cuánto está sucediendo en nuestras comunidades. Sin embargo, los números nos ayudan a planificar, presupuestar y compartir más información sobre MARKED con nuestros amigos como tú. Entonces, aquí hay un vistazo a algunos números de la semana pasada.

15 water jugs |15 garrafones de agua

As part of our nutrition programs, we emphasize the importance of drinking filtered water in addition to a vitamin rich meal. Before MARKED came to educate the communities, very few drank water and very little. Now, to see jugs empty and children asking for more is a huge victory.

Como parte de nuestros programas de nutrición, enfatizamos la importancia de beber agua filtrada además de una comida rica en vitaminas. Antes de que MARKED viniera a educar a las comunidades, muy pocos tomaban agua y muy poca. Ahora, ver cántaros vacíos y niños pidiendo más es una gran victoria.

You can probably think of many benefits of drinking water and for us, there is another very crucial one. Due to environmental pollution, residents of the communities we serve are more likely to contract kidney disease and drinking water to help the kidney filter out toxins is an easy first line of defense.

Probablemente puedas pensar en muchos beneficios del agua potable y, para nosotros, hay otro muy importante. Debido a la contaminación ambiental, los residentes de las comunidades a las que servimos tienen más probabilidades de contraer enfermedades renales y tomar agua para ayudar al riñón a filtrar las toxinas es una primera línea de defensa fácil.

55 pounds of tortillas | 25 kilos de tortillas

There really is nothing quite like a fresh corn tortilla. It is the perfect complement to nearly every Mexican dish. At MARKED, tortillas are the one of the few things we do not make in-house. We choose to support a local business instead. Just a few doors down from Casa MARKED is where we are able to purchase our tortillas, hot off the comal and simultaneously, empower others in the community.

Realmente no hay nada como una tortilla de maíz fresca. Es el complemento perfecto para casi todos los platillos mexicanos. En MARKED, las tortillas son una de las pocas cosas que no hacemos en casa. Elegimos apoyar un negocio local en su lugar. A solo unas pocas puertas de Casa MARKED es donde podemos comprar nuestras tortillas, recién salidas del comal y, al mismo tiempo, empoderar a otros en la comunidad.

650 pounds of vegetables | 295 kilos de verduras

Each Monday is our market day where part of our staff drives into the city to go to the market where we have deals with local vendors to get the very best produce at the very best price. Though the weather in our area does not change too drastically. the seasons of harvest for vegetables do so our community kitchen director, Paty works hard to plan meals, adjusting menus to incorporate vegetables and make intentional pairings with other foods for the best vitamin absorption as well as great taste!

Cada lunes es nuestro día de mercado donde parte de nuestro personal conduce a la ciudad para ir al mercado donde tenemos acuerdos con los vendedores locales para obtener los mejores productos al mejor precio. Aunque el clima en nuestra área no cambia drásticamente. las temporadas de cosecha de verduras sí. Hacen que nuestra directora de cocina comunitaria, Paty, trabaje arduamente para planificar las comidas, ajustando los menús para incorporar verduras y hacer maridajes intencionales con otros alimentos para la mejor absorción de vitaminas y un gran sabor.

320 sandwiches | 320 lonches

In addition to the hundreds of meals served at Casa MARKED and in our partner schools (reaching just under 1,000 most weeks), we have also been bringing sandwiches on our visits to Agua Caliente and Chalpicote to offer a bit of nourishment to the families there and give people a reason to come out and chat with us. Because of these sandwiches, we have been able to pray for and with these 320 people as well. We get to hear their stories, encourage them, and discuss the dreams they have for their families.

Además de los cientos de comidas que se sirven en Casa MARKED y en nuestras escuelas asociadas (llegando a poco menos de 1,000 la mayoría de las semanas), también hemos estado trayendo sándwiches en nuestras visitas a Agua Caliente y Chalpicote para ofrecer un poco de alimento a las familias allí y dar a la gente una razón para salir y charlar con nosotros. Gracias a estos sándwiches, hemos podido orar por y con estas 320 personas también. Podemos escuchar sus historias, animarlos y discutir los sueños que tienen para sus familias.

We currently have two local public schools that we partner with to serve meals and support the staff and families in every way we can. You might remember reading about the progress we have seen with the public preschool that has been a part of MARKED for a couple of years now but we also have a newer addition, the primary school in Chalpicote where we hope to increase feedings and our involvement.

Actualmente tenemos dos escuelas públicas locales con las que nos asociamos para servir comidas y apoyar al personal y las familias en todo lo que podemos. Es posible que recuerde haber leído sobre el progreso que hemos visto con el preescolar público que ha sido parte de MARKED durante un par de años, pero también tenemos una incorporación más reciente, la escuela primaria en Chalpicote, donde esperamos aumentar la alimentación y nuestra participación.

20 teens in discipleship group | 20 adolescentes en grupo de discipulado

Along with the Mommy & Me class, school partnerships and daily programs at Casa MARKED for school-aged children, our staff is giving special attention to the teens in San Pedro too. Sam. our community center director leads prayer, Bible study and discussions with 20 young men. In the areas we serve, there are infinite pressures teenagers face, especially males. At MARKED, we aim to show them another option of life, one of faith; one that does not permit the stresses of life to sway our joy or compromise our values.

Junto con la clase de educación inicial, las escuelas aliadas y los programas diarios en Casa MARKED para niños en edad escolar, nuestro personal también brinda atención especial a los adolescentes en San Pedro. Sam el director de nuestro centro comunitario dirige la oración, el estudio de la Biblia y los debates con 20 jóvenes. En las áreas en las que servimos, hay infinitas presiones que enfrentan los adolescentes, especialmente los hombres. En MARKED pretendemos mostrarles otra opción de vida, la de la fe; uno que no permita que las tensiones de la vida influyan en nuestra alegría o comprometan nuestros valores.

Big numbers reflecting growing enrollment, participation and thousands of meals served are great yet it may come as a surprise that the number that has us jumping for joy is one. Ultimately what we do is not just serve meals or play sports, it is building relationships and seeing a culture transformed, one by one so that the next generation always lives more fully than the last. This week, one is our biggest number.

Los grandes números que reflejan el aumento de la inscripción, la participación y las miles de comidas servidas son excelentes, pero puede sorprender que el número que nos hace saltar de alegría sea uno. En última instancia, lo que hacemos no es solo servir comidas o practicar deportes, sino construir relaciones y ver una cultura transformada, una por una, para que la próxima generación siempre viva más plenamente que la anterior. Esta semana, uno es nuestro número más grande.
