Today marks our 12th anniversary! What an incredible 12 years it has been.

¡Hoy se cumple nuestro 12º aniversario! Qué increíbles 12 años han sido.

When MARKED was first established, we were partnering with just one other institution- a children´s home and were reaching a humble 80 children through our support network. At that time, with those now seemingly small numbers, was a beautiful beginning to a movement that has grown significantly.

Cuando se estableció MARKED por primera vez, nos asociábamos solo con otra institución: un hogar para niños y estábamos llegando a unos humildes 80 niños a través de nuestra red de apoyo. En ese momento, con esos números ahora aparentemente pequeños, fue un hermoso comienzo para un movimiento que ha crecido significativamente.

Now, we directly serve over 300 children each day. We offer nutritious meals at our local public partner schools and from our very own community center, Casa MARKED. We also support community sports programs and coach our own soccer teams too. We offer weekly educational programs like our literacy club and afterschool tutoring class.

Ahora atendemos directamente a más de 300 niños cada día. Ofrecemos comidas nutritivas en las escuelas públicas locales aliadas con MARKED y en nuestro propio centro comunitario, Casa MARKED. También apoyamos programas deportivos comunitarios e incluso, entrenamos a nuestros propios equipos de fútbol. Ofrecemos programas educativos semanales como nuestro club de lectoescritura y clases de regularización por la tarde.

Over the years, we have partnered with dozens of local schools, churches, children´s homes and even had the privilege to partner with local government all with the goal of seeing negative generational cycles broken and families restored! This year though, was a breakthrough year in so many ways- starting our own school, being invited to serve in a neighboring village, and seeing the fruits of the seeds that have been sown over the years.

A lo largo de los años, nos hemos asociado con docenas de escuelas locales, iglesias, hogares para niños e incluso hemos tenido el privilegio de trabajar junto con el gobierno local, ¡todo con el objetivo de romper los ciclos generacionales negativos y restaurar las familias! Sin embargo, este año fue un gran avance en muchos sentidos: comenzar nuestra propia escuela, ser invitados a servir en un pueblo vecino y ver los frutos de las semillas que se han sembrado a lo largo de los años.

We are just so thankful. It is a privilege and an honor to serve these communities. Each day we are so grateful to have the opportunity to teach, train, equip and empower at-risk families. The victories, the salvations, the advances, and the growth of this year isn´t just ours to celebrate, it´s all yours too. Thanks to you and every other person who has joined the MARKED movement, lives are being transformed, roots mended and families made whole.

Estamos muy agradecidos. Es un privilegio y un honor servir a estas comunidades. Cada día estamos muy agradecidos de tener la oportunidad de enseñar, capacitar, equipar y empoderar a familias en riesgo. Las victorias, las salvaciones, los avances y el crecimiento de este año no son solo nuestros para celebrar, son todos tuyos también. Gracias a usted y a todas las personas que se han unido al movimiento MARKED, se están transformando vidas, se están reparando raíces y se están recuperando familias.

There´s so much to celebrate and yet we so firmly believe, the best is yet to come!

Hay mucho que celebrar y, sin embargo, creemos firmemente que ¡lo mejor está por venir!

A neighbor saved | Un vecino salvado

Just down the street from Casa MARKED is the family home of one of our staff members. There, live her parents, siblings and their children. While many of the kids often come to Casa MARKED and participate in our programs, the adults are often not as available to come by due to work. 

A unos pasos de Casa MARKED está la casa de la familia de uno de los miembros de nuestro personal. Allí viven sus padres, hermanos y los hijos. Muchos de los niños suelen venir a Casa MARKED y participar en nuestros programas, pero los adultos muchas veces no están disponibles para venir debido al trabajo.

So, it is truly remarkable to us how MARKED, our culture and beliefs had reached even the father. About a month ago, we received news that the father had fallen ill. Despite the efforts made to manage the sickness, an infection had spread across his body and he was in very serious condition. 

Así que nos sorprende como MARKED, nuestra cultura y creencias habían llegado hasta al padre. Hace aproximadamente un mes recibimos la noticia de que el padre había enfermado. A pesar de los esfuerzos realizados para controlar la enfermedad, una infección se había extendido por su cuerpo y él se encontraba en un estado muy grave.

As the family waited for transportation to the hospital to arrive, we were invited to pray for the father. It was in that intimate moment that he decided to give his life to the Lord. A time of genuine  worry and concern about his health quickly shifted to a joyful time, gratefully celebrating his decision. 

Mientras la familia esperaba que llegara el transporte al hospital, fuimos invitados a pasar y orar por el padre. Fue en ese momento íntimo que él decidió entregar su vida al Señor. Un momento de angustia y preocupación por su salud rápidamente se convirtió en un momento de alegría, celebrando con gratitud su decisión.

Just this week, we were able to chat with him a bit more. After multiple appointments and treatments, he is back on his feet, fully healed and has returned to work already! 

Esta misma semana pudimos conversar un poco más con él y después de múltiples citas y tratamientos, ¡está de nuevo en pie, completamente curado y ya ha regresado a trabajar!

We are filled with such joy knowing another soul has been won over, and also, how this salvation has positively impacted the whole family. Hearts have been softened, forgiveness granted, and relationships restored in this family thanks to this father’s bold decision. It is a new beginning for them! 

Nos llena de alegría saber que otra alma ha sido ganada y también cómo esta salvación ha impactado positivamente a toda la familia. Los corazones duros se han suavizado, se ha concedido el perdón y se han restablecido las relaciones en esta familia gracias a la decisión de este padre. ¡Es un nuevo comienzo para ellos!

How exciting it is for us to be reminded that members in our communities that do not or cannot come through our doors, are also being reached! Our neighbors are watching, seeing and hearing what MARKED is doing and how our culture is different from the one outside, and they want in.

¡Qué emocionante es para nosotros recordar que los miembros de nuestras comunidades que no entran o no pueden cruzar nuestras puertas también están siendo alcanzados! Nuestros vecinos están observando, viendo y escuchando lo que MARKED está haciendo y cómo nuestra cultura es diferente a la de afuera, y quieren ser parte.

A generation transformed | Una generación transformada

Whenever we see the now-adults who were just children when MARKED began working in these areas, it reminds us of the incredible transformation we have seen across the villages where we serve.

Cada vez que vemos a los ahora adultos que eran solo niños cuando MARKED comenzó a trabajar en estas áreas, nos recuerda la increíble transformación que hemos visto en las aldeas donde servimos.

 If you have been with us since the beginning, you may remember that there were no paved roads to connect the main highway to the villages we serve. Thankfully, now we have a narrow but very much accessible road all the way down the mountain to the banks of the lake where the communities are.

Si has estado con nosotros desde el principio, quizás recuerdas que no había caminos pavimentados para conectar la carretera principal con los pueblos a los que servimos. Afortunadamente, ahora tenemos una calle pavimentada que baja de la montaña hasta las orillas del lago donde están las comunidades.

When we began visiting these areas and building relationships with the families here, the majority of people were unclothed too. It is incredible to see transformations like these take place over time. After over a decade of MARKED partnering with local organizations, children's homes, schools, and churches, we have been able to see significant changes take place.

Cuando comenzamos a visitar estas áreas y a establecer relaciones con las familias aquí, la mayoría de las personas también estaban desnudas. Es increíble ver transformaciones como éstas a lo largo del tiempo. Después de más de una década de asociación de MARKED con organizaciones locales, casahogares, escuelas e iglesias, hemos podido ver que se han producido cambios significativos.

 Now, we are seeing how the first generation of children we served living differently than the generation prior. The little boys and girls who grew up in the midst of crime, violence, drugs, abuse and other negative cycles found refuge and support in MARKED. Through our programs, they learned to stand up, to say “no” to the negative cycles. Now, they are saying “yes” to creating new, healthy cycles in place of those old, broken ones. They are working hard to raise their children so that together as a family, they can experience life to the fullest.

Ahora, estamos viendo cómo la primera generación de niños a la que servimos vive de manera diferente a la generación anterior. Los niños y niñas que crecieron en medio del crimen, la violencia, las drogas, el abuso y otros ciclos negativos encontraron refugio y apoyo en MARKED. A través de nuestros programas, aprendieron a levantarse, a decir “no” a los ciclos negativos. Ahora dicen “sí” a la creación de ciclos nuevos y saludables en lugar de los viejos y rotos. Están trabajando duro para criar a sus hijos para que juntos, como familia, puedan experimentar la vida al máximo.

In the areas we serve, the education scene has drastically changed too. For the 2022-2023 school year, the local public school district was overwhelmed by the amount of new enrollees for preschool which led to us sharing our space and as you probably know, opening a school at our community center! In our partner schools in La Peña and Chalpicote, there was a record high in enrollment too. Attendance is also currently at the highest point it has ever been. Our numbers from the schools we work with and in conversations with other local schools where many children from our daily programs attend class, show more children are starting school and also finishing elementary school, with more continuing on to middle school as well. 

En las áreas donde servimos, el panorama educativo también ha cambiado drásticamente. Para el año escolar 2022-2023, el distrito escolar público local se vio abrumado por la cantidad de nuevos inscritos en preescolar, lo que nos llevó a compartir nuestro espacio y, como probablemente ya sabías, ¡abrir una escuela en nuestro centro comunitario! En nuestras escuelas aliadas en La Peña y Chalpicote también se registró un récord de matrícula. La asistencia también se encuentra actualmente en el punto más alto que jamás haya existido. Nuestros números de las escuelas con las que trabajamos y en conversaciones con otras escuelas locales donde muchos niños de nuestros programas diarios asisten a clase, muestran que más niños están comenzando la escuela y también terminando la escuela primaria, y muchos más continúan también en la escuela secundaria.

From being small, quiet fishing villages isolated from much of the outside world, are now growing towns with a changing trajectory. New statistics are in the making and new records are being reached. One generation has already been transformed and others are already being positively affected too!

Thank you for being a part of this movement. Thank you for positively impacting lives. Thank you for helping the communities along Lake Chapala and beyond live better, and more fully than anyone ever imagined.

De ser pequeñas y tranquilas comunidades de pescadores aisladas de gran parte del mundo exterior, ahora son pueblos en crecimiento con una trayectoria cambiada. Se están elaborando nuevas estadísticas y se están alcanzando nuevos récords. Una generación ya ha sido transformada y otras ya están siendo impactadas positivemente también.

Gracias por ser parte de este movimiento. Gracias por impactar vidas positivamente. Gracias por ayudar a las comunidades a lo largo del lago Chapala y más allá a vivir mejor y más plenamente de lo que culaquier hubiera imaginado.

These were the words that resounded at our ribbon-cutting ceremony. This week was a big one in MARKED history as we opened our very first school, “Preescolar Nueva Galicia” which holds classes at our community center in San Pedro.

Estas fueron las palabras que resonaron en nuestra ceremonia de inauguración. Esta semana fue importante en la historia de MARKED ya que abrimos nuestra primera escuela, “Preescolar Nueva Galicia”, que imparte clases en nuestro centro comunitario en San Pedro.

As our staff, “padrinos” (community sponsors/advocates) and school board (made up of parents of students) stood together at the gates of Casa MARKED to officially open the school, our directors and founders spoke but surprisingly, one of the moms spoke up too. She had written out a letter of thanks to read and express the sentiments from all the parents. She mentioned in her letter that through the process of opening the school, they realized the power of dreaming and working towards those dreams because when we all come together, they aren't just dreams, with the right collaboration and resources, they can become a reality!

Mientras nuestro personal, los “padrinos” (patrocinadores/defensores de la comunidad) y la junta escolar (compuesta por padres de estudiantes) se reunieron en las puertas de Casa MARKED para abrir oficialmente la escuela, nuestros directores y fundadores hablaron pero, sorprendentemente, una de las mamás habló también. Había escrito una carta de agradecimiento para leer y expresar los sentimientos de todos los padres. Mencionó en su carta que a través del proceso de apertura de la escuela, se dieron cuenta del poder de soñar y trabajar para lograr esos sueños porque cuando todos nos unimos, no son solo sueños; con la colaboración y los recursos adecuados, ¡pueden convertirse en una realidad!

Happy tears were shed as our directors, founder, and even the representatives from CONAFE spoke. This school was an answer to prayer, a dream fulfilled and a reminder to all that when we come together, we can do so much more. Together, we are building something much grander than a classroom of students, we are laying the foundation for a brighter tomorrow. We are empowering these children and their families so that the ceilings we reach will be the floor of the upcoming generation.

Lloramos con lágrimas de felicidad mientras hablaban nuestros directores, fundadora e incluso los representantes de CONAFE. Esta escuela fue una respuesta a la oración, un sueño cumplido y un recordatorio para todos de que cuando nos unimos, podemos hacer mucho más. Juntos, estamos construyendo algo mucho más grandioso que un salón de clases de estudiantes; estamos construyendo la base para un mañana mejor. Estamos empoderando a estos niños y a sus familias para que los techos que alcancemos sean el piso de la próxima generación.

Though it was a busy week, there was such peace. The first week of classes went so smoothly. The children were excited to go into their classroom and not even one tear was shed as they waved goodbye to their parents. So many of these children formed part of the Mommy & Me group since they were little babies which means they are familiar with the teacher, our space, our rules, and routines.

Aunque fue una semana ocupada, había mucha paz. La primera semana de clases transcurrió sin problemas. Los niños estaban emocionados de entrar a su salón de clases y ni siquiera se lloró una lágrima mientras se despedían de sus padres. Muchos de estos niños formaron parte del grupo de educación inicial que eran pequeños, lo que significa que conocen nuestra maestra, el espacio, nuestras reglas y rutinas.

We cannot wait to share more about our kindergarten as well as our other partner schools as the school year gets going! We met with parents of the partner schools this week as each year they must vote to implement our programs and agree to their part of the partnership. These interactions with whole families are so important to us because our heart is not just to offer a one-size-fits-all solution to each community but instead, hear their hopes, help evaluate their needs and create a plan of action for healthy, long-lasting change, not just this year but for the years to come.

¡Estamos ansiosos por compartir más sobre nuestro preescolar y nuestras otras escuelas aliadas a medida que avanza el año escolar! Nos reunimos con los padres de las escuelas aliadas esta semana, ya que cada año deben votar para implementar nuestros programas y aceptar su parte de la asociación. Estas interacciones con familias enteras son muy importantes para nosotros porque nuestro corazón no es solo ofrecer una solución única para cada comunidad, sino escuchar sus esperanzas, ayudar a evaluar sus necesidades y crear un plan de acción para una vida sana, un cambio duradero, no sólo este año sino en los años venideros.

Thank you for being a part of MARKED, for helping us break cycles of poverty and empower lives in the Ribera Chapala region and beyond! This week feels like just the beginning of more powerful transformation.
