Here in Mexico, the holidays are only just now winding down. Over the weekend, the country observed “Dia de los Reyes Magos” also known as All Kings or Day of the Three Kings. On this day, it is customary to share a “Rosca de Reyes” or “King´s Wreath” bread together with your family or friends, which thanks to a generous donor, we were able to do with 200 children!
Aquí en México, las vacaciones apenas están terminando. Durante el fin de semana, el país celebró el “Día de los Reyes Magos”. En este día es costumbre compartir un pan de Rosca de Reyes junto con tu familia o amigos, lo cual gracias a un generoso donante pudimos realizar con 200 niños!
Here you can see, we had the traditional “rosca” at our partner school in La Peña as well as with the kids at Casa MARKED and what fun it was! This unique bread withholds a great deal of symbolism too, starting with its shape that is supposed to represent a crown, like the crown of King Herod from who Mary and Joseph were trying to hide Jesus from in the Christmas story. On top of the bread are pieces of candied and dried fruit called “ate” in Spanish. Not only are they delicious, but they are placed to look like jewels on the crown.
Aquí puedes ver, partimos la tradicional “rosca” en nuestra escuela aliada en La Peña así como con los niños en Casa MARKED y ¡qué divertido fue! Este pan único también tiene mucho simbolismo, comenzando por su forma que se supone representa una corona, como la corona del rey Herodes, de quien María y José intentaban ocultar a Jesús en la historia de Navidad. Encima del pan hay trozos de frutos secos y confitados que se llaman “ate”. No sólo son deliciosos, sino que están colocados para que parezcan joyas de la corona.
Now, the traditional way to have this “Rosca de reyes” is for each person to take turns cutting out a slice while everyone else watches. This is because there are little figurines baked inside of the rosca representing the baby Jesus in hiding. It is supposed that whoever finds a little figurine inside his or her piece of bread is like a symbolical grandparent to the baby Jesus and should provide the tamales for the next celebration, “Dia de la Candelaria”, the day on which the country celebrates when Jesus was taken to the temple to be blessed.
Ahora, la forma tradicional de tomar esta “Rosca de reyes” es que cada persona se turne para cortar una rebanada mientras los demás miran. Esto se debe a que dentro de la rosca hay pequeñas figuritas horneadas que representan al niño Jesús escondido. Se supone que quien encuentra una figurita dentro de su pedazo de pan es como un abuelo simbólico del niño Jesús y debe proveer los tamales para la próxima celebración, el Día de la Candelaria, día en que el país celebra cuando Jesús fue llevado al templo para ser bendecido.
So really, you could say that the fun and celebrations around here really never stop! Of course in our case, cutting the rosca is a special time to again gather around the table, remember the Christmas story, and of course share in the excitement of who will get a little figurine in their bread! We will not be expecting any of the kids to bring tamales but perhaps our directors in San Pedro could be convinced to make some.. if you have ever tried Sam and Paty´s tamales, you know they are legendary!
Así que realmente se podría decir que la diversión y las celebraciones por aquí nunca terminan. Por supuesto, en nuestro caso, partir la rosca es un momento especial para volver a reunirnos alrededor de la mesa, recordar la historia navideña y, por supuesto, compartir la emoción de quién recibirá una figurita en su pan. No esperaremos que ninguno de los niños traiga tamales, pero tal vez nuestros directores en San Pedro puedan ser convencidos de hacer unos... si alguna vez has probado los tamales de Sam y Paty, ¡ya sabes que son legendarios!
Tamales or no tamales, we are blessed and so thankful to have gotten to share this experience with so many children, enjoying Mexican culture and partaking in a special tradition they probably would not have been able to otherwise. These small moments of connection, laughing together and remembering God´s love for us- these are the types of moments we hope to have lots of this year.
Con tamales o sin tamales, somos bendecidos y muy agradecidos de haber podido compartir esta experiencia con tantos niños, disfrutando de la cultura mexicana y participando en una tradición especial que probablemente no habrían podido de otra manera. Estos pequeños momentos de conexión, reír juntos y recordar el amor de Dios para nosotros, son del tipo de momento que esperamos tener muchos más este año.
